🚨 Training exercise Saturday, Oct. 17

Expect an increased presence of first responders and emergency vehicles near the Lakewood Rail Yard and West Pierce Fire & Rescue Station 21.

This is only a drill. There is no emergency or threat to the public. Please do not call 911 to report activity related to this training exercise.

If you are experiencing or witnessing an actual emergency, call 911.

Do not be alarmed if you see a large emergency response near the Lakewood Rail Yard (Lakewood Ave SW, 100th St SW, and Steilacoom Blvd SW) and West Pierce Fire & Rescue Station 21 on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Multiple agencies including Sound Transit, West Pierce Fire & Rescue, the Lakewood Police Department, South Sound 911, and neighboring fire departments will be participating in a large-scale training exercise throughout the day.

Community members may notice an increased presence of first responders and emergency vehicles around the Lakewood Rail Yard.

These exercises help ensure our crews are prepared to respond when real emergencies happen. Please be mindful and avoid gathering near the training sites or obstructing emergency vehicles and personnel.

Today, we joined our partners at the Washington State Patrol in receiving the Critical Incident of the Year Award from the Washington Chapter of APCO/NENA.

The award recognizes the response to the tragic line-of-duty death of Washington State Patrol Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting on December 19, 2025.

During an incredibly difficult and heartbreaking incident, dispatchers from South Sound 911 and the Washington State Patrol worked together to coordinate critical information, manage resources and support responding personnel. Even as the tragedy unfolded, they continued answering calls and providing essential services to the communities and agencies depending on them.

We are incredibly proud of our team and grateful for the professionalism, compassion and dedication demonstrated by everyone involved.

While we are honored by this recognition, we also recognize the profound loss behind it. Our thoughts remain with Trooper Guting’s family, friends and colleagues, and all those impacted by her death.

We remember Trooper Guting and honor her service and sacrifice.

- Keep your doors locked.
- Keep outside lights on at night.
- Add an exterior camera system.
- Get to know your neighbors.

- Remove valuables and keep items out of sight.
