What a great way to say goodbye to summer and get ready for the school year!

Our team had a great time joining the Tacoma Police Department and community partners at Saturday's Kids Health & Safety Fair at the Tacoma Dome.

Families stopped by throughout the event to connect with local resources, pick up school supplies, participate in activities, and learn more about the services available to help keep our community safe and healthy.

We especially enjoyed meeting so many kids and families—and sharing a little about what happens when you call 911.

Thank you to the Tacoma Police Department for bringing so many organizations together and hosting such a fun, family-focused event!

Ever wonder who helps guide our agency?

Our Board of Directors includes 11 elected officials who represent the local agencies and communities we serve. As our governing body, the Board provides oversight and direction, with our executive director reporting directly to its members.

Board representation reflects the size of the areas we serve, helping bring the perspectives of communities across our service area to the table.

We hate to brag, but we have some pretty great people leading the way around here. 👏

Meet our new Communications Managers: Mandy Vincent, Nic Sylvain, and Amanda Callaway.

Together, they bring over 50 years of experience to their new roles, helping lead and support the people behind the headsets who serve our communities 24/7.

We’re pretty lucky to have this crew stepping into these roles — and okay, maybe we’re bragging just a little.

We couldn’t ask for a better evening in Puyallup!

Our team is out at One Puyallup until 8 p.m., connecting with partners and neighbors across the community.

If you’re at Pioneer Park, come find us, say hi, and maybe learn a thing or two about what happens on the other end of 911.

DYK? Many young children struggle to recognize an emergency or use a cell phone to call 911. Even older elementary age kids often know something is wrong but aren't prepared to call or clearly explain what is happening.

This is a skill that can be taught and practiced.

We offer free education presentations to help prepare students to respond in an emergency by teaching:

- How to call 911
- How to learn and memorize their address
- When to call and what types of situations are emergencies
- Who responds during an emergency
- How to answer the call taker's questions

To learn more and request a presentation, please visit southsound911.org/education.

How’s the handoff going? Well, they’re already matching.

And no, this was not planned.

As former Chief Operations Officer Mark Mears gets ready to pass the baton, we’re excited to welcome Kathy McAlpine as South Sound 911’s new Chief Operations Officer!

Kathy joins us after a distinguished career with the Tacoma Police Department and brings extensive leadership experience, a deep understanding of public safety, and strong connections to the communities and agencies we serve.

We’re thrilled to have her on board and looking forward to what’s ahead.

As for the coordinated outfits? We'll call that a seamless transition.

Need help in an emergency but don't speak English?

Our Language Line service is here to bridge language barriers, ensuring EVERYONE gets the assistance they need when calling 911.

Українською:
Наша служба Лінія мови тут, щоб подолати будь-які мовні бар'єри, забезпечуючи, що КОЖЕН отримує допомогу, яку вони потребують при дзвінку за номером 911.

Helpful tips to make sure you get the help you need:

- Identify your language in English, if possible, to help us connect you with the right interpreter.
- Don't hang up - stay on the line.
- Once connected with an interpreter, share details about the emergency, your location, name, and phone number, and answer the call taker's questions through the interpreter.

We're here for you, no matter the language!

You've probably heard it before, and it's true—in an emergency, every second matters.

Many smartphones allow you to call 911 directly from the lock screen without a passcode. Emergency calling features can vary by phone and settings.

Take a minute today to show your child how to access emergency calling from your phone. Please don't practice by actually calling 911.

And just a quick reminder: If you accidentally call 911, don't hang up! Stay on the line to let us know you're okay. If you hang up, we have to call back, which takes time from answering incoming 911 calls.

It's a simple conversation that could make a big difference if they ever need help.

You can also help them prepare by practicing three important things:

- Know where a trusted adult keeps their phone.
- Know your address.
- Know to stay on the line and answer the 911 call taker's questions.

You hope they'll never need it. But if they do, they'll be ready.
