A Not So Fun Fact Friday…

🇺🇸 A remarkable 9/11 notary connection

One of the lesser-known stories of September 11th is that Notaries played an important role in helping 9/11 victims’ families establish legal proof of death.

After September 11, thousands of people were missing, and New York families faced an unusual legal problem: they needed documentation establishing that their loved ones had died in the attacks, but traditional death certificates could not immediately be issued.

The New York legal community created a “Notary Project” specifically to help. Volunteer notaries notarized affidavits needed by victims and their families to obtain financial assistance and death certificates. The project reportedly notarized approximately 35,000 victim-related forms, helping facilitate about $48 million in aid.

There is considerable evidence that Shakespeare once worked for a Warwickshire Notary and later had repeated contact with other English Notaries. It is felt that he drew on these experiences to write such plays as “The Merchant of Venice.”
