MUM-T SOE Phase 1 Training Week at Ft Carson

Soldiers of 4ID have started training in MUM-T Soldier Operational Experimentation (SOE) Phase 1. Soldiers are training on 2 PC and tele-operation mobility functions. Preparations continue at U.S. Army Fort Carson for the Soldier Operational Experimentation (SOE) Phase 1 to further develop learning objectives for the Manned Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) concept. Modified Bradley Fighting Vehicles known as Mission Enabling Technologies Demonstrators (MET-D) and modified M113 tracked armored personnel carriers, known as Robotic Combat Vehicles (RCV) are being utilized. The demonstration is structured around three main events: Operator Training, Gunnery, and Situational Training Exercises (STX).

The Next Generation Combat Vehicle – Cross Functional Team and CCDC Ground Vehicle Systems Center, in collaboration, are conducting soldier operational experiments to observe, collect and analyze feedback from Soldiers to assess the feasibility of integrating unmanned vehicles into ground combat formations at Ft. Carson, Col., from June 15 – Aug. 14, 2020. This is the first in a series of Soldier experiments the Army is conducting to assess if robotic combat vehicles will increase the lethality of ground combat units. For this initial experiment, the Army is equipping a platoon-sized element of 4th Infantry Division Soldiers with Mission Enabling Technologies Demonstrators (MET-D).

Dr. Bruce Brendle, GVSC’s Ground Vehicle Power and Mobility associate director lead an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) panel discussion on the challenges associated with bringing commercial technologies into military applications at the Military Vehicle Electrification session of 2020 SAE International Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Symposium in Pasadena, Calif., Jan 30, 2020. Representatives from GVPM and VEA conducted GVSC’s 5th Electrification Forum which was included as an independent session. The Electrification Forum panel also consisted of (from left to right) Klaus Etzell of General Atomics, Rolf Lund of BAE Systems, Michael Bolton of Oshkosh Corporation and Hanaan Miller of General Motors. Presentations were also made from multiple GVSC associates to engage with commercial automotive component manufactures on the requirements for electrifying NGCV platforms. As part of this engagement, GVSC was able to cultivate several new potential vendors for our electrification programs.

Dr. Ora Peskovitz, Oakland University President, met with Director Jeffrey Langhout at Ground Vehicle Systems Center, Jan. 23. Oakland University has been a longstanding partner with the Ground Vehicle Systems Center and is a member of the Automotive Research Center (ARC), the Army’s Center of Excellence in Modeling and Simulation. Currently, GVSC is funding research at OU in the areas of decision-based mobility modeling and the probability of mobility for mission planning, through the ARC. GVSC and Oakland University have a relationship that includes recruiting, educating the workforce, and basic research.
