Warmer Relations and a Cooler Planet

In celebration of Earth Day, Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba and Israeli Ambassador to the US and UN Gilad Erdan joined together with friends at the UAE Embassy in Washington, DC to plant an olive tree and sow the seeds of closer cooperation to address the global climate challenge.

The garden at the Embassy has been renamed the “Peace Garden” in honor of the event and the UAE-Israel relationship. Since the signing of the Abraham Accords in September 2020, the UAE and Israel have been collaborating on renewable energy, water conservation and other areas. Both countries are also participating in President Biden’s Leaders Climate Summit.

As part of the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, 50% of the country’s electricity needs will be met by clean energy sources by midcentury.

The strategy targets an energy mix that combines renewable, nuclear and other sources to meet the UAE’s economic requirements and environmental goals as follows:
→ 44% renewable energy
→ 38% gas
→ 12% clean coal
→ 6% nuclear

How Nuclear Energy Works

What is the difference between a peaceful nuclear energy plant like the UAE’s Barakah Plant and other types of power plants?

The difference is in how the heat is created. Power plants that run on fossil fuels burn coal, oil or natural gas to generate heat. In a nuclear energy plant, heat is produced from splitting atoms – a process called nuclear fission.
