September 11 — a day of remembrance, shared by France and the United States.

Yesterday, at Eielson Air Force Base, the French detachment deployed as part of Mission PEGASE, including the general commanding of the French Air Ops command present for the mission, joined their American counterparts for the USAF ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

For France, September 11 also marks the death of Captain Georges Guynemer, killed in combat on September 11, 1917.

Two dates, two generations, but the same values: courage, sacrifice and to serve.

A powerful moment of remembrance, reflecting the strong and enduring bond between our two nations and our two Air Forces.

Lest we forget. N’oublions jamais. 🇺🇸🇫🇷

"On September 11, 2001, Islamist terrorism struck America and shook the world.

"3,000 lives cut short. Families broken. And so many lives forever marked by the loss of a father, a mother, a child, a loved one.

"Among the victims on that day were hundreds of men and women who ran toward danger. Firefighters, police officers, rescue workers, citizens – their heroic bravery will forever be etched in our memories.

"Behind those attacks was one desire: to terrorize free peoples, weaken our democracies and undermine our values.

"But America stood firm. America rose again.

"France stands with the United States in defending human rights, pluralism, the freedoms of opinion and conscience – these shared values must never be threatened.

"Twenty-five years later, our response remains the same. Never give in to fear, remember what it is we want to protect for the future: freedom, democracy, and our ability to remain united when they are threatened.

"France stands with the American people. We will never yield to obscurantism. Never."

Le 11 septembre 2001, le terrorisme islamiste frappait l’Amérique et bouleversait le monde.

3 000 vies fauchées. Des familles brisées. Et depuis, tant de vies marquées à jamais par la perte d’un père, d’une mère, d’un enfant, d’un proche.

Parmi les victimes, des centaines de femmes et d’hommes qui, ce jour-là, ont couru vers le danger. Pompiers, policiers, secouristes, citoyens : leur courage héroïque restera à jamais gravé dans les mémoires.

Derrière ces attentats, une même volonté : terroriser les peuples libres, fragiliser les démocraties et faire reculer nos valeurs.

Mais l’Amérique a tenu. Elle s’est relevée.

Dans la défense des droits de l’homme, du pluralisme, de la liberté d’opinion et de conscience, la France se tient aux côtés des États-Unis : ces valeurs partagées ne sauraient être menacées.

Vingt-cinq ans après, notre réponse reste la même : ne jamais céder à la peur, rappeler ce que nous voulons défendre pour l’avenir. La liberté. La démocratie. Notre capacité à rester unis quand elles sont menacées.

La France est aux côtés du peuple américain. Face à l’obscurantisme, nous ne céderons rien. Jamais.

With friends and partners across the country, we today as we reflect on the lives lost and the horrors that darkened a bright September morning 25 years ago.

At French diplomatic representations across the United States, and especially at our Embassy and Consulate in Washington, D.C., and our Consulate in New York, we remember those who lost their lives in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York.

We honor their memory and stand with all those whose lives were forever changed.
