West Sand Lake Fire Department The West Sand Lake Volunteer Fire Company was the third rural volunteer fire company to be established in Rensselaer County, New York. Founded in 1872.

The fire department is made up of 3 organizations:

The Fire Company, which is made up of the active, inactive, associate and life members of the fire department. These are the firefighters and EMT's! They do fundraising, respond to alarms and are always training and learning new skills. Members are as young as 16, and as old as their 80's! The Ladies' and Junior Axillary, which was founded as a sub committee of the fire company with the intent of being an organization for the fire fighter's wives to do fund raising and other activities to support the fire fighters. Times have changed, and many of our Ladies are now active fire fighters and EMT's, and some of our fire fighters help the ladies with their fundraising. Members are as young as 14 and have been as old as their 90's. The Fire District, which is the government entity. The Fire Commissioners are elected to the Board for 5 year terms by the voters of the fire district. They meet once a month and are responsible for ensuring fire protection to the taxpayers, and ensuring the firefighters have the tools, buildings and equipment they need to protect the taxpayers, at a cost the tax payers can afford. The Fire District is supported by two paid employees, the treasurer, and the secretary. The Treasurer is responsible for ensuring the Fire District adheres to local, state and national finance laws. She also keeps track of the finances and pays the bills approved for payment by the commissioners. The Secretary is responsible for the official records of the district, including communications, correspondence and a written record of ALL meetings. She also acts as checks and balances with the treasurer insuring the bills get paid and keeping track of the checks, invoices or purchase orders issued. They are the ONLY paid employees of the fire district.

🚒 Mutual Aid Training Night part 2 🚒

On Tuesday, August 11, the West Sand Lake Fire Department hosted a mutual aid drill with East Greenbush Fire Company,Inc., Poestenkill Fire Company, Taborton Fire, and Speigletown Fire District.

Firefighters trained in Search & Rescue, Fire Attack, and FAST Operations under realistic conditions, including limited visibility, simulated victims, obstacles, and mayday scenarios. These hands-on drills help strengthen skills, teamwork, communication, and preparedness for real emergencies.

We would like to thank all participating departments, EMS personnel, and the Rensselaer County - Public Safety and Fire Training Staff for helping make this training a success.

🚒 Mutual Aid Training Night 🚒

On Tuesday, August 11, the West Sand Lake Fire Department hosted a mutual aid drill with our neighboring departments from East Greenbush Fire Company,Inc., Poestenkill Fire Company, Taborton Fire, and Speigletown Fire District.

Firefighters participated in a series of realistic training evolutions focused on:

🔥 Fire Attack
🔎 Search & Rescue
🚨 FAST (Firefighter Assist and Search Team) Operations

The training environment was designed to simulate real-world emergency conditions, with smoke-filled rooms, limited visibility, obstacles, simulated victims, and unexpected firefighter Mayday scenarios. Crews worked together to strengthen their skills in search operations, fire suppression, firefighter rescue, incident command, communications, and accountability.

A special emphasis was placed on teamwork, situational awareness, and firefighter safety, with rehab and hydration stations available between evolutions and safety officers monitoring all operations.

Training opportunities like this are invaluable in building strong relationships with our mutual aid partners and ensuring we are prepared to work together when our community needs us most.

A sincere thank you to all participating departments, EMS personnel, and everyone who helped make this training a success. Your commitment to training and operational readiness helps keep our firefighters and communities safe.

After countless hours of training, responding to emergencies, and serving our community, it was wonderful to take a moment to relax, reconnect, and enjoy quality time with the people who support us every step of the way.

Our families are truly the unsung heroes behind everything we do. Their support, sacrifices, and understanding make it possible for us to answer the call when our community needs us most.

A sincere thank you to all of our members and their families who joined us for a day filled with great food, laughter, and lasting memories. The West Sand Lake Volunteer Fire Company is more than a team, we're a family.

Saturday was a busy and productive day for our members! 🚒

Before responding to a structure fire Saturday afternoon, our firefighters spent the morning sharpening their skills during the second round of Heavy Rescue Equipment Training alongside members of the Taborton Fire.

Working with the outstanding instructors from Capital Technical Rescue & Safety, participants took part in hands-on simulations and real-world rescue scenarios, continuing to build proficiency with our new heavy rescue equipment.

Training focused on: ✅ Paratech Rescue Struts
✅ Paratech Air Bags
✅ Vehicle Stabilization Techniques

🚒 Training Night at the Firehouse 🚒

Tonight's drill focused on flushing and inspecting dry hydrants located on Sheer Road, Thais Road, Pond Hollow Road, and West Fall Village.

This training helps ensure our dry hydrants are in proper working order and ready when needed during an emergency. It also provides valuable hands-on experience for our drivers and pump operators, allowing them to practice drafting operations and strengthen their skills.

💧 What is a Dry Hydrant? Dry hydrants are permanent, non-pressurized pipes installed in ponds, lakes, or other water sources. They allow fire apparatus to quickly access water in areas without municipal hydrant systems.

Dry hydrants provide: • Direct engine access to a water source
• Faster drafting operations
• Reliable water access points year-round (when conditions allow)

These systems are a critical part of protecting our communities and improving our emergency response capabilities.
