We are organizing a symposium at ACS Spring 2027 to honor the late Ed Brush, a beloved member of the green chemistry education community and a longtime friend of Beyond Benign. 💙

The symposium, "Tribute to Edward (Ed) Brush: Environmental Justice Education in the Classroom," will highlight innovative research, teaching practices, curriculum development, community-engaged projects, and assessment approaches that advance environmental justice learning across K-12, higher education, and informal educational settings.

If your work examines how education can prepare students to understand and address environmental justice, we would love to hear from you! We welcome submissions that explore topics such as:

🔹 Environmental justice pedagogy
🔹 Community-centered and place-based learning
🔹 Sustainability and environmental literacy
🔹 Equity, inclusion, and access in environmental education
🔹 Teaching about environmental health and pollution burdens
🔹 Interdisciplinary approaches to environmental justice

Scholars, educators, practitioners, students, and community partners are encouraged to submit by September 28, 2026: https://buff.ly/x6Y4UC0

📢 Chemistry educators and curriculum developers in the United States: Apply for the second cohort of Green Chemistry Professional Mentoring Networks (PMNs)!

Led by Beyond Benign and Monmouth University and supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the PMNs are structured, semester-long professional communities where faculty work alongside peers, mentors, and experienced leaders to explore and implement green chemistry in their courses. Participants receive financial support, access to educational resources, mentorship, and opportunities to connect with a national network of educators advancing green chemistry education.

➡️ Apply by Friday, November 13th, to be considered for the 2027-2028 cohort! https://buff.ly/Pfz5kUf

Each PMN is centered around one of the four Green Chemistry Commitment (GCC) learning objectives: Theory, Toxicology, Laboratory Skills, or Application. These objectives align directly with the 2023 American Chemical Society Guidelines for Bachelor's Degree Programs, which now include working knowledge of green chemistry principles as a critical requirement, and the ability to assess chemical products, processes, and real-world applications as markers of excellence.

Through a combination of summer summits, virtual meetings during an academic semester, mentorship, and collaborative project work, participants gain practical experience implementing green chemistry within their own educational contexts.

📢 🌱 We invite educators and curriculum developers to contribute case studies that bring real-world examples of , sustainability, and systems thinking into the classroom.

The special Case Studies Collection on the Green Chemistry Teaching and Learning Community ( ) aims to help prepare students for careers in chemistry and sustainability.

Submitting a case study is an excellent way to support educators by expanding access to high-quality teaching materials, promote active learning by helping students connect classroom content to real-world challenges, and gain recognition for your work. Accepted case studies will be published with a DOI and full author credit.

We are inspired by this reflection from Dr. Raymond Borg, a chemistry lecturer at the University of Hawai'i Maui College (UHMC), the first academic institution in Hawaiʻi and the broader Pacific to sign the Green Chemistry Commitment (GCC). 🌍

In this article, Ray reflects on attending the 49th Reunião Anual da Sociedade Brasileira de Química (RASBQ) in Campinas, Brazil, where he saw a green chemistry community gaining momentum through resourcefulness, collaboration, and attention to local context.

That experience connects closely to UHMC’s work, grounded in Mālama ʻĀina, caring for the land, as Ray continues weaving green chemistry into core courses and helping students see sustainable chemistry as part of the places they know.
