From the Aleppo Archives: how we figure it out...

We've recently taken some steps to share some of our valuable research resources. When trying to identify old pieces, especially with items which could have been used in multiple organizations such as costumes and degree props, it is incredibly helpful to have a selection of old regalia catalogs to search through. There used to be an entire industry supporting the fraternal world. Over the years the hundreds of smaller companies fell off and merged into the big names we see most often and are represented by the few who remain today. We recently scanned our collection and will continue to add to it:

Shriners Children's Boston recently welcomed David Drobnis to our hospital, where he presented a donation on behalf of his father, Steven Drobnis.

A long-time member of the Aleppo Shriners, Steven has chosen Shriners Children's Boston as his sole philanthropic organization. We are deeply grateful for his generosity and commitment to our mission.

We look forward to many years of partnership and thank Steven for helping us provide the Most Amazing Care Anywhere. ❤️

From the Aleppo Archives: a complete mystery...

This vintage hand painted sign was recently acquired for the collection. It's a great piece on its own, but we have no idea when it's from! The text suggests an event where Aleppo was hosted by someone else, so thinking more of a visitation or joint ceremonial instead of something like an Imperial Session trip where we'd be at a hotel.

The only clue to date it is that we can see it was painted on the back side of an advertisement, unfortunately it only shows part of the ad which features a woman wearing a black marching band shako style hat. Anyone have any ideas?

Boston’s Best Comedians

Well, at least some of them, will be performing at The Cycles Unit’s Comedy Night on Friday, October 2nd in the Harvey J. Waugh “Fez Room. The Comedy Nights are a blast. The Aleppo Cycle Unit brings in headliner Comedians from the Boston Comedy circuit. These are comedians who are based in Boston but, perform all over the country.

This year our Host, Mike Viscelli will open the show. Next up, will be master singing impressionist/ comedian – Joey Voices. To cap off the show our Headliner will be Paul D’Angelo.

Why not get a bunch of your friends together and come have a blast at Aleppo. You’ll have fun weather you like it or not!!! Tickets are only $25.00 per person and you can reserve a whole table of 10 for $250.00. The date is Friday, October 2nd. Doors open at 6:00. From the Aleppo Archives: 1916 in Buffalo

Here's an great piece which was recently donated. This was worn by a representative to the 1916 Imperial Session which was held in Buffalo, NY. Aleppo's representatives that year were Francis Appleton (Potentate 1927-1928), Walter Morrison (Potentate 1915-1926), George Shackford (Potentate 1912-1914), and James Blake (Potentate 1903-1905). There was also of course Benjamin Rowell, Aleppo's Recorder, who was there as Imperial Recorder.

Unfortunately Aleppo's minutes from that era are missing and the only notices we have from that year are for two theater parties, but from consulting some other published sources we can get some perspective on the 1916 Session.

This was the last great Imperial Session before the war. Grand banquets, parades, and entertainment kept the thousands of Nobles in attendance occupied. With the United States' entrance into the First World War in 1917, the next two Imperial Sessions would be "business only" events; with train travel being restricted and many Nobles being too old for war service, the bands and patrols paraded at home to support war bond drives. It would not be until the 1919 Imperial Session in Indianapolis would a return to the grand spectacles the Shrine was known for be seen again (despite spirits being slightly dampened by the passing of the 18th Amendment and the onset of the Volstead Act).

One interesting highlight from the 1916 Session was the performance of a full form ceremonial to serve as an instructional direction so all Temples would know how to perform the ritual correctly. This was the result of ongoing requests from multiple Temples to see the Ritual exemplified.
