🎉📚 WPS Schools Are Ready to Welcome You!

The back-to-school excitement is growing across Worcester Public Schools! Here’s a look at just a few of the schools that recently welcomed students and families for fun-filled events: Goddard School of Science & Technology, Gates Lane School of International Studies, Clark Street Community School, and Woodland Academy.

Gerald Creamer Center Principal Angela Plant Takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge! 🧊💦

Gerald Creamer Center Principal Angela Plant recently took the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Ice Bucket Challenge twice! She took on the challenge to show her support for GCC English teacher and 2025–26 WPS Educator of the Year, Taylor Nunez-Murray.

Nunez-Murray, who was diagnosed with ALS at age 36, took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge this summer with friends and family. Ms. Plant volunteered to take on the challenge herself in front of GCC staff!

With the help of Nunez-Murray’s daughter, West Tatnuck School third grader Matilda, and GCC teacher Ms. D’Ambra, Principal Plant had two ice-cold buckets of water poured over her head.

Ms. Plant now challenges the rest of the GCC staff to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge!

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a fundraising and awareness campaign that helps support research and services for people living with ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells responsible for voluntary muscle movement.

Participants pour a bucket of ice water over themselves, challenge others to do the same, and often make a donation to help advance the fight against ALS. 🧊💙

🌍 Expanded Programs: Our English learners are gaining proficiency at higher rates than in years past, and we’ve expanded Worcester Dual Language Magnet School to eighth grade! 🎓

📚 New School Libraries: We are opening libraries in seven elementary schools! (Quinsigamond, Gates Lane, Belmont Street, Flagg Street, Nelson Place, Norrback Ave, and Worcester Dual Language Magnet). 📖

⚽ Athletics: We’re offering more middle school sports through support from the Play Ball Foundation! 🏀

🍎 Belmont School Teachers Are “Forever In Kindergarten!”

‍🎉 Belmont School’s four kindergarten teachers have worked together as a team for 16 years!

🖼️ To honor the milestone, the four got matching t-shirts that say, “Forever in Kindergarten” and includes Polaroid-style photos of their own back-to-school pictures!

New Teacher Orientation 🎓

A new school year means welcoming a new group of educators to Worcester Public Schools!

Over three days at North High School, more than 170 of Worcester’s newest Unit A and B educators and staff took part in New Teacher Orientation, kicking off a year-long onboarding experience designed to help them feel prepared, supported, and connected to the district.

The orientation provided new staff with information and resources from departments across the district, giving them the tools, knowledge, and connections they need to start the new school year and their careers in WPS with confidence.

On the final day of orientation, experienced WPS educators answered questions during a panel session, sharing their insights and tips for getting started on the right foot. Superintendent Brian E. Allen also stopped by to welcome the district’s newest educators and staff and wish them well as they begin the school year.

Worcester Public Schools Stands Against Racism ✊🏾

At the 2026 Leadership Convening, Worcester Public Schools launched its Stand Against Racism Campaign, bringing together Superintendent Brian E. Allen, student-athletes from across the district, and community partners from the Worcester NAACP and YWCA of Central Massachusetts.

Together, our students and Superintendent Allen made a powerful pledge to stand against racism, bias, bullying, and discrimination in our classrooms, hallways, courts, fields, and throughout our community.

This commitment is about more than words. Throughout the 2026–27 school year, WPS will work with our community partners to educate, speak up, hold one another accountable, and create safe and welcoming environments where every student is valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.

We will call out hate. We will educate. We will stand up. We will speak out.

2026 Leadership Convening 🎓

District leaders came together for the 2026 Leadership Convening at Doherty Memorial High School, officially kicking off the 2026–27 school year.

The day featured professional development activities and info tables for staff, a keynote address from Niro Feliciano, LCSW, a powerful poem by Worcester Youth Poet Laureate and Doherty sophomore Samira Tang Rainwater, and a special duet by South High Community School music teacher Daniel Gay and his daughter, Burncoat High School senior Imogene Gay. 🎶

Superintendent Brian E. Allen welcomed leaders back and celebrated the district’s accomplishments from the past year, including gains in STAR Reading and Math benchmarks, record Early College enrollment, continued growth of the Grow Your Own Future Teacher Pipeline, and other district highlights. 📈

Reaffirming our district mission, Vision to Action, Superintendent Allen encouraged WPS leaders to build on last year’s momentum, stay the course, and turn our shared vision into meaningful action across our schools.

🚌 Expanding School Safety: Training Our Nutrition, Transportation & Parent Information Center Teams 🍎

Safety in our schools extends to every staff member who supports our students each day.

Last week, staff from the Nutrition Department, Transportation Department, and Parent Information Center completed safety training on the I Love U Guys Foundation Standard Response Protocol (SRP), which outlines Worcester Public Schools’ unified emergency response and communication procedures.

From the cafeteria to the school bus and beyond, we’re ensuring that the adults who support our students every day are prepared to respond quickly, communicate clearly, and help keep our students safe and secure. 💙

Worcester Public Schools Conducts Major Window Replacement Project at Worcester East Middle School Among Summer Facility Projects 🏫

City and state leaders gathered to celebrate the major window replacement project at Worcester East Middle School, installing 375 new energy-efficient windows to boost insulation, security, and air quality.

“Improving the safety and energy efficiency of our school facilities is fundamental to our commitment of providing modernized and safe facilities for students and staff. These summer projects reflect our continued commitment to every school community in Worcester. We thank our state and federal partners for their continuous support,” said Superintendent Brian E. Allen.

As the start of the school year approaches, the Worcester Public Schools Facilities Department is also completing upgrades across the district, including ADA accessibility improvements at Thorndyke Road School and Lincoln Street School, repairs to the hydroponic garden container at Vernon Hill School, and various district-wide maintenance projects.

📍 Join us at Belmont Tower Apartments, 40 Belmont Street, at ⏰ 12:00 PM or 4:00 PM on Wednesday, September 2, for public forums on the Worcester Public Schools Boundary and Quadrant Alignment Project.

🗓️ Additional public forums will be held through November 7.

🗣️ We want to hear your feedback!

Initial proposals under consideration include:
🗺️ Redesigned school assignment boundaries
🔀 More logical school-to-school pathways
🚌 Adjustments to school start and end times to expand school bus access
🎒 Expand full-day preschool
