🌧️ August Rainfall Update – Samoa

August was much drier than usual across Samoa.

Rainfall was below normal at all stations, with some stations recording one of their driest Augusts on record.

📉 This shows that August was an exceptionally dry month for Samoa.

🌦️ El Niño information for Samoa

Samoa has experienced three consecutive months of below-normal rainfall, with August being one of the driest Augusts on record at some stations.

Forecast: There is an 80–90% chance of below-normal rainfall over the next three months.

What this could mean: Increased pressure on water supplies, crop stress, higher bushfire risk, and impacts on health and the environment.

EL NINO - Recommended Actions

As El Nino conditions persist over Samoa for the next few months, the public is advised to adhere to the following recommended key actions to mitigate risks:
1. Avoid burning rubbish – strong winds can quickly spread fires and increase wildfire risks.
2. Limit outdoor activities during peak hours – stay cool and avoid prolonged exposure to heat.
3. Conserve water – avoid unnecessary water use and practice water conservation.
4. Protect yourself from the sun – wear a hat and use sunscreen.
5. Watch out for heat-related symptoms and to seek immediate medical attention if it occurs.
