The safety of journalists remains a priority for the Netherlands. We are pleased to extend our support to Scidev for several more months to help strengthen the protection of journalists and media professionals in Albania.

In cooperation with the Shoqata e Prokuroreve, the project will enhance the practical, consistent, and rights-based response of prosecutors and law enforcement to threats, intimidation, harassment, obstruction, and attacks against journalists, media professionals, and public watchdog actors.

Join one of our four Rule of Law trainings on the Management of Borders, Human Rights, Democratic Institutions, and Integrity of Civil Servants, provided by the Netherlands Helsinki Committee.

The Management of Borders training and the Democratic Institutions training are held online from 28 September to 09 October 2026, and in-person in the Netherlands from 26 October to 06 November 2026. Applications for both training programmes are accepted until 3 August!

The Human Rights training and the Integrity of Civil Servants training are held online from 09 November to 20 November 2026, and in-person in the Netherlands from 30 November to 11 December 2026. The deadline to apply for both trainings is 7 September!

Last week, three peer exchange activities took place under the MATRA project Enhancing the Role of the Supreme Court of Albania through Judicial Cooperation, bringing together judges and judicial institutions from the Netherlands and Albania.

The programme included a dialogue on the quality of judgments, led by Dutch Supreme Court President Dineke de Groot, with the participation of judges from across the Albanian judiciary, as well as representatives of the High Judicial Council and the High Inspector of Justice.

It also featured a workshop with the Supreme Court of Albania on EU law and the EU preliminary ruling procedure, as part of the ongoing cooperation between the Supreme Courts of the Netherlands and Albania. The week concluded with a peer exchange with the Appeal Court of General Jurisdiction on court management and judicial administration, led by Judge Esther de Rooij.

These exchanges continue to foster professional dialogue, knowledge sharing, and cooperation between the judiciaries of the Netherlands and Albania.

Media freedom and the safety of journalists continue to be top priorities for the Netherlands.

During a working breakfast hosted by the Embassy, representatives from media organizations, state institutions, and international partners shared their views on the challenges and opportunities for strengthening a free, independent, and safe media environment in Albania.

We are proud to support journalists and civil society actors who contribute to informed public debate through professional, ethical reporting, working without fear or favor. Protecting media freedom is a shared responsibility and a fundamental element of any democratic society.

The Netherlands remains dedicated to supporting journalists and civil society actors who promote accountability, transparency and engage in public debates with their expertise and integrity.

As his mission in Tirana draws to a close, Ambassador Vos met with Migen Qiraxhi, a long-time partner representing QENDRESA QYTETARE.

He expressed his appreciation for their fresh and creative contributions to societal change and policy dialogue in Albania.
