EBA 26 Public Sector Negotiations Update.

Standing strong for ANMF members.

The ANMF bargaining team has now fully negotiated all 73 log of claim items, including the priorities, concerns and lived experiences of nurses and midwives.

We’re continuing to work constructively with the government, with the focus firmly on securing an offer that delivers real and lasting improvements for our members.

The next bargaining meeting is expected in the coming weeks.

We’ll keep advocating, negotiating and pushing for the agreement our members deserve.

Our public hospitals are operating under bed block and gridlock every single day, yet the Department of Health isn’t staffing them to 100% capacity.

By using administrative “average occupancy” calculations, staffing levels are kept artificially low while our Emergency Departments overflow.

The real numbers:
🏥 Royal Hobart Hospital: Funded for 471 beds, but only staffed to an average of 91.9% occupancy. That leaves the equivalent of 38 beds unstaffed by nurses and midwives every day!
🏥 Launceston General Hospital: Total capacity of 342 beds, but only routinely staffed for 299 beds. That’s 42 beds missing in action or unstaffed!

We don’t need statistical tricks. We need ENFORCEABLE MANDATORY RATIOS based on real patient needs.

Data exposes chronic understaffing across Tasmania’s health system

New data uncovered by the ANMF Tasmanian Branch has exposed the chronic understaffing of Tasmania’s public health system, with more than 7,674 nursing and midwifery shifts left unfilled over the past 6-9 months, this is equivalent to more than 61,395 nursing hours.

The data, obtained through Right to Information, also reveals significant reliance on double shifts and overtime, as nurses and midwives continue to experience burnout, exhaustion and moral injury.

The ANMF is calling on the Tasmanian Government to staff, value and protect nurses and midwives, and ensure the health system can deliver safe, quality care.

📣 AUSTRALIA NEEDS CARE YOU CAN COUNT ON

Today, ANMF Tasmanian Branch members joined the national call for urgent action to fix Australia’s aged care crisis as the ANMF launched its ‘Australia needs care you can count on’ campaign.

ANMF Tasmanian Branch Secretary Emily Shepherd and ANMF Delegates gathered in Launceston to highlight the campaign’s key priorities, while Tasmanian Aged Care Delegates were in Canberra advocating directly to Federal politicians.

The campaign called on the Federal Government to take action in three critical areas:

👩‍⚕️ Mandated staffing ratios and skills mix across all shifts to replace the current care minutes system and align with evidence-based benchmarks, delivering higher quality care and mandating a proper framework for aged care providers to meet.

🛡️ Preventing workplace violence and aggression by implementing a 10-point plan and person-centred care planning to better protect nurses and care workers from physical, verbal and emotional violence.

💰 Accountability and transparency for $25 billion in aged care funding by introducing public reporting of aged care providers’ financial performance and use of public funding.

The message from frontline aged care workers was clear: aged care is not fixed.

In Tasmania, responses from 73 aged care workers across multiple facilities highlighted ongoing concerns about understaffing, care workers being required to undertake non-care duties, nurses spending increasing time on paperwork rather than with residents, and the reduction or loss of Enrolled Nurse positions.

With Tasmania’s ageing population and increasing numbers of people living with dementia, we need an aged care system that provides safe, quality care - with the right staff, skills and resources.
