πŸ”₯ Life Membership Awarded to Captain Colin Stubbs πŸš’

Today, Mullamuddy Bush Fire Brigade had the honour of presenting Captain Colin Stubbs with his Life Membership of the Mullamuddy Bush Fire Brigade.

Col joined the NSW Rural Fire Service in 1963 and has dedicated more than 60 years of service to the organisation, including over 50 years as a member of Mullamuddy Brigade.

During that time, Col has served the Brigade as President, Captain, Senior Deputy Captain and Deputy Captain, while also mentoring and training generations of firefighters. His leadership, knowledge and commitment have played a significant role in shaping the Brigade and supporting our community for decades.

Col’s service has also been recognised through the award of the National Medal and the RFS Long Service Medal.

Brigade President David Pearce presented Col with his Life Membership plaque, pin and certificate at today’s Quarterly General Meeting, as Col is unable to attend next month’s AGM.

Thank you for your outstanding service, leadership and dedication to the Mullamuddy Bush Fire Brigade and the wider community. This recognition is thoroughly deserved.

Congratulations Col on becoming just the fifth Life Member of the Mullamuddy Bush Fire Brigade.

International Firefighters’ Day πŸ”₯

01/05/2026

Today, 30 April marks the end of the Bush Fire Danger Period for all Local Government Areas (LGAs) across NSW, with Gwydir, Mid-Western, Moree Plains and Narrabri ending their fire restrictions today.

While landholders no longer require a fire permit, you are still required to notify the and your neighbours at least 24 hours before lighting a fire. To notify the RFS, please complete the online form available on our website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify

Please note that in some areas, you may still need an environmental permit from your local council or permit from Fire and Rescue NSW. You must also be aware of restrictions on the size and materials permitted in burn piles.

For more information on safe pile burning, visit the website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/safeburning

🚨 Updated Bush Fire Prone Land Map – Mullamuddy Area 🚨

Mid-Western Regional Council has released an updated Bush Fire Prone Land Map, now in effect.

The area outlined shows roughly the Mullamuddy Brigade area, and as you can see, most of our bridge area is now classified as bush fire prone.

πŸ‘‰ What’s changed?
The main update is the inclusion of grassland areas (Category 3), meaning farmland and open country are now recognised as part of the bush fire risk.

πŸ‘‰ What this means:
β€’ This does NOT mean the risk has suddenly increased
β€’ There are no new rules or laws introduced
β€’ It mainly affects planning and development

πŸ‘‰ What it’s really about:
This mapping is about better identifying where fire can spread, helping landowners and agencies understand risk and plan ahead.

Grass fires, in particular, can move quickly under the right conditions. Something we’re all familiar with around our district.

Even though we’re coming to the end of the bush fire danger period, it’s still a good reminder to:
βœ”οΈ Know your risk
βœ”οΈ Maintain your property
βœ”οΈ Have a plan

For most people, nothing changes day to day, but being prepared always matters!

πŸ”₯ Wanting to light a fire this weekend?

Make sure you follow the rules for wherever you are this weekend ⬇️

For those in the Mid-Western Regional Council area:

πŸ”₯ The Bush Fire Danger Period is still in place meaning Fire Permits are still required for hazard reduction (including bonfires) and agricultural burns.

πŸ”₯Fire Permits are not required for fires for the purpose of cooking food, provided that:
βœ… the fire is in a permanently constructed fireplace;
βœ… at a site surrounded by ground that is cleared of all combustible materials for a distance of at least two metres all around;
βœ… the fire is completely extinguished before leaving.

For much of our district, it is still very dry and it is not taking much for grass fires to take hold and risk threatening property. Please follow the rules so our volunteers can enjoy their weekend at home with their family and friends.

More information can be found here:

If you’re travelling this weekend, be safe on our roads.
