MICROCHIPPING YOUR PET - Why It's Important

Microchipping your pet is crucial because it acts as a permanent, tamper-proof form of identification that significantly increases the chances of being reunited with them if they get lost. In South Australia, this information is recorded on the Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) database, which allows vets, shelters, and council Community Safety Officers to identify your pet and contact you instantly if they are found.

Here is why microchipping (and specifically registering on DACO) is so important:
- Permanent Identification: Unlike collars and tags, which can fall off or be removed, a microchip is inserted under the skin and stays with your pet for life.
- Significantly Higher Reunion Rates: Studies show that microchipped dogs are over twice as likely to be reunited with their owners, and cats are over 20 times more likely.
- Legal Requirement in SA: In South Australia, it is mandatory to microchip your dog or cat.
- DACO Registration: When a lost pet is scanned, the unique number is checked against the Dogs and Cats Online (DACO) database to retrieve your contact details.
- Prevents Unnecessary Euthanasia: If a lost pet is not microchipped, it is much harder for shelters to find the owner, which can lead to animals being rehomed or euthanized.
- Proof of Ownership: If your pet is stolen and later recovered, a microchip provides definitive proof that you are the rightful owner.

**Crucial Step: A microchip is only effective if your contact details on DACO are up to date. If you move or change phone numbers, your animal is lost or rehomed, or has sadly passed away you must update your details on Dogs and Cats Online**

Please contact the City of Port Lincoln on 8621 2300 for further information or to update microchip details in DACO

🐾 Animal Management Plan 2026–2030 Adopted

Council has adopted the Animal Management Plan 2026–2030, which sets out a clear and practical approach to how dogs and cats will be managed across Port Lincoln over the next four years.

Shaped by community feedback, the Plan focuses on responsible pet ownership, community education, animal welfare, and clear on-leash and off-leash areas to help keep our shared spaces safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Key points include:
👉️ The Port Lincoln Foreshore is on-leash at all times, including the lawns, footpaths, beach, jetty and swimming enclosure.
👉️ Laguna Beach will remain an off-leash area, reflecting community feedback and its established use as an off-leash beach.
👉️ Dogs must be on-leash at all times in the C*D.
👉️ The Parnkalla Trail remains a designated on-leash area for the safety of walkers, cyclists and families.
👉️ Sporting ovals can be used for dog exercise when organised sport, training or community events are not taking place, provided dogs are under effective control and owners clean up after them. At Centenary Oval, dogs may be off-leash before 8.30am and after 5.00pm on weekdays under the same conditions.
👉️ Dogs are not permitted in children’s playgrounds or other restricted public places, as outlined in the Plan.

Council will also continue working closely with the Dog and Cat Management Board to encourage desexing, microchipping and identification of cats.

The adopted Animal Management Plan 2026-2030 is available on Council’s website at https://buff.ly/E4oFm3l

🐾 Fireworks & Pet Safety Reminder 🐾

Don't forget fireworks are scheduled for tonight at 9:30pm for the Tunarama Festival.

With fireworks lighting up the sky, it's important to remember that loud noises and bright flashes can be very frightening for pets.

To help keep your pets safe and calm:

🏠 Keep pets indoors or in a secure, familiar space
🔒 Check gates, fences and doors are secure
🎶 Close windows and play soft music or the TV to reduce noise
🐕 Ensure pets are wearing ID tags and microchip details are up to date
❤️ Stay calm and reassure your pets — they often take cues from us

If you know your pet becomes distressed, speak with your veterinarian in advance for advice on ways to help them cope.

🎄 Did you get a pet this Christmas? Know the true cost.

Bringing home a kitten or pup can be heartwarming — but in South Australia, it comes with important legal responsibilities and costs that often go unseen.

🐾 Mandatory Legal Requirements

1. Registration $28 - $112 :
All dogs and cats aged 3+ months must be registered via Dogs and Cats Online - https://buff.ly/4eEi89g . $28 - $112 *concessions apply and further discounts apply if your dogs are both desexed and microchipped.
*Currently there is no fee to register your cat in Port Lincoln, but it is a legal requirement to do so.*

2. Microchipping $30 - $50:
In South Australia, all dogs and cats must be microchipped: Before it is sold, or; Before it reaches 12 weeks of age, or; Within 28 days of an owner taking possession of the dog or cat, or: If a veterinarian has granted an extension of time, before the extension of time has expired. **Vets may grant an exemption from microchipping on the grounds that it would pose an undue risk to the health of a dog or cat, or that it would adversely affect the growth, development or wellbeing of your dog or cat. For more information you should contact your vet.**

3. Desexing (“Neutering”) $275 - $900:
All dogs and cats born after 1 July 2018 must be desexed by a registered veterinary surgeon: before it is 6 months of age; or within 28 days after the owner takes possession of the animal; or if the owner is granted an extension of time, before the day specified in the exemption. Some exemptions apply. For dogs see here: https://buff.ly/CxKV7ZI for cats see here: https://buff.ly/0g38EN5

💰 Minimum upfront cost upwards of $350 and then there are other expenses including vaccinations, puppy school, beds, collars and leashes, flea and worming treatments, food and bowls, grooming, toys, treats and any veterinary care required.

⚠️ Fines for Non-Compliance
Failing to meet any requirement can lead to fines—per dog or cat, per breach starting at $170 per offence.

🧭 Why This Matters

Supports responsible pet ownership and prevents unwanted litters. Ensures lost pets can be reunited quickly via microchip. Avoids hefty fines and legal trouble.

✔️ Final Take
Pets are not just a one-off purchase to gift to someone. Ensure you budget for more than adoption fees and remember a cat or dog can live for over 12 years sometimes even 20!
