While Banned Books Week is primarily a U.S. initiative, its message about protecting the freedom to read is relevant everywhere.

With an election coming up in Manitoba, it's a good time to remember that local decisions and local elections play an important role in supporting libraries, educators, writers, publishers, booksellers, and readers.

Censorship is a national problem that happens at the local level. That means elections matter! The right to read — and democracy — depend on us. Don’t forget to prepare for elections big and small.

October is Canadian Library Month, and it's also a municipal election month in Manitoba. Now is a great time to get loud about the important role of libraries and library workers!

All month long, libraries and library partners across Canada are raising awareness of the valuable role libraries play in Canadians’ lives. More than just a place to find books, libraries promote cultural awareness, engage in the community, provide educational programs, support freedom of expression and information, and so much more.

When library workers gather and learn from one another, libraries and their communities across Manitoba grow stronger 📚💙

It was wonderful to see such an amazing turnout yesterday at Library Connections 2026. We had an outstanding lineup of speakers who shared their knowledge on resource sharing, partnerships, and community engagement. Thank you to all our speakers for sparking thoughtful discussions and inspiring new ideas!

Thank you to our hosts at the Gaynor Family Regional Library for welcoming us into your beautiful space and helping create such a warm and engaging experience for all attendees. And a special thank you for the delicious lunch.

Finally, thank you to everyone who attended and came ready to share ideas, discuss the challenges and opportunities in our field, build relationships, and celebrate the important work happening in our communities.

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we encourage library staff, educators, researchers, and community members to explore the Canadian Federation of Library Associations' (Fédération Canadienne Des Associations De Bibliothéques) Truth and Reconciliation Report and Recommendations.

Created by the CFLA-FCAB's Truth and Reconciliation Committee, the report outlines ten recommendations to help libraries, archives, and cultural memory institutions advance reconciliation, respect Indigenous cultures and knowledge systems, and improve access to Indigenous voices and perspectives.

Libraries have an important role to play in supporting learning, reflection, and reconciliation. Across Manitoba, libraries provide access to Indigenous literature, histories, educational resources, community programs, and materials that help deepen understanding of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis experiences.

It's Right to Know Week!

Since 2002, Right to Know Day is celebrated around the world on September 28. In Canada, Right to Know Day extends to a week of celebrations.

The purpose of this day is to raise awareness among citizens of their right to access information, and promote freedom of information as essential to both democracy and good governance.

Libraries and library workers around the world, including those in Manitoba, play a critical role in upholding access to information for all. As the digital world continues to evolve, libraries help ensure that people can access the information they need – regardless of age, education, ethnicity, language, income, physical limitations or geographic barriers.

Last month, Dr. Leo Baskatawang visited Headingly Correctional Centres to speak to residents about restorative justice, Indigenous knowledge, and to share his lived experience.

In-person programs are so critical to creating those humanizing moments and personal connections that can make a real difference.

"As part of that experience, I was gifted this magnificent beaded medallion that was handmade by one of the residents. My goal of the presentation was to send a message of the importance of having perseverance and attaining an education." - Dr. Baskatawang
