The Manitoba Library Association is deeply saddened by the loss of a cherished community member, librarian, and advocate, Cathy Ching, whose impact on libraries across Manitoba was profound.

Cathy served South Central Regional Library for 20 years - the last 8 as Director - with compassion and a strong belief in the value of public libraries.

Cathy spoke about the importance of intellectual freedom, and remained positive in the face of censorship attempts. Her leadership during the book‑banning fight inspired not only her own community, but the entire province with her determination to uphold the fundamental right to freedom of expression and the unrestricted pursuit of knowledge for all individuals.

In recognition of their passion and advocacy work, Cathy and her team became the inaugural recipients of the MLA Human Rights Award.

Last year, Cathy brought Library Connections to Manitou and ensured her entire staff could attend. She loved shared learning, and the sense of community that libraries create. She loved her job, loved her team, and loved the place she called home.

She will be remembered as a tireless advocate, a mentor, and a cherished member of our community. MLA is thinking of Cathy's family and friends during this difficult time. 🕊️ 💙

The Manitoba Library Association is deeply saddened by the loss of a cherished community member, librarian, and advocate, Cathy Ching, whose impact on libraries across Manitoba was profound.

For incarcerated people, reading and access to information is a rare connection to the outside world. It is also a basic right.

Prisoners' Justice Day is observed annually on August 10 to remember individuals who have died and/or experienced harm while incarcerated, protest inhumane prison conditions, and advocate for prisoners' rights. This includes the right to read.

Prisoners’ Justice Day takes places each year on August 10, honouring those who have passed and/or were harmed by Western prison systems.

For the third year, MLA - Prison Libraries Committee is taking part in a Community Walk. We will walk through the neighbourhood alongside community partners handing out lunches and books to community members. Join us!

The Manitoba Library Association is excited to share Kirsten Wurmann's presentation from the 2026 National Action Committee for Access to Justice Conference.

In addition to her roles with the MLA as Program Coordinator and a member of our Prison Libraries Committee, Kirsten works with the Manitoba Law Library, where she advocates for accessible legal information.

This year’s conference, Advancing People‑Centred Justice in Canada: Data Sharing and Knowledge Building, brought together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, community organizations, and justice system leaders from across Canada and beyond to explore what it means to build a people-centred justice system that learns, adapts, and earns public trust.

Kirsten participated in the panel “Making Knowledge Usable: Language, Literacy, and Legitimacy in Justice”, which examined how law, language, and institutional culture can either empower people or keep them excluded. Together, they show how knowledge - when translated, shared, and co-created - becomes a means of participation.
