๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Young people leading the conversation on mental health.

TCC Young Leaders from St Joseph's Catholic School have designed their second round of popular assemblies on youth mental health and wellbeing โ€” and they'll be facilitating them too.

Taking place at Ysgol Maes Garmon, Mold on 7 July 2026, the assemblies will bring together around 100 young people to identify, discuss, and vote on the issues that matter most to them.

Using the Popular Assemblies model developed by The Humanity Project, the sessions place young people firmly in the driving seat. Guided by trained Youth Leaders and supported through critical thinking and deliberative democracy, participants will work together to identify solutions and organise actions that support the wellbeing of their communities.

The issues and asks identified during the assemblies will feed directly into the Mental Health Voices Collaboration (MHVC), ensuring that young people's voices are heard by decision makers.

Ruth Marshall, TCC Co-Manager โ€“ Programmes and Partnerships, said:
"At TCC we believe young people have the power and skills to solve issues in their community if given a voice. We are committed to empowering young people to organise on issues that affect them, beyond tokenistic consultations."

We're excited to see what ideas, actions, and solutions emerge from this youth-led event.

Why Lived Experience Matters

The people closest to the challenges often understand the solutions best.

The Wrexham Poverty Action Collaboration Tackling Poverty Assembly will bring together those with lived experience alongside community organisations and decision-makers to discuss practical actions for the future.

Listening matters.

Acting on what we hear matters even more.

Weโ€™ve recently launched the Mental Health Voices Collaboration (MHVC) campaign - created to ensure that lived experience drives real local change in Wrexham.

Through listening to people across our communities so far, we've heard some clear messages:

๐Ÿ’ฌ People don't always feel listened to or taken seriously
โณ Waiting lists are a major challenge
๐Ÿค Services need to be more person-centred and joined up
๐ŸŒฑ Earlier support and prevention matter
๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Community-based support makes a difference

These aren't just statistics. They're real experiences shared by people in our community.

MHVC brings together individuals, community groups, charities, professionals and organisations who want to improve mental health support by ensuring lived experience is heard, valued and acted upon.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ ARFIDandME Campaign | Looking Beyond the Labels

One of the messages emerging through our ARFIDandME campaign is the importance of seeing the person, not just the diagnosis.

No two people experience life in exactly the same way. Not every autistic person is the same. Not every eating disorder presents in the same way. Not every disabled person faces the same challenges or needs the same support.

Yet many individuals and families tell us that some of the biggest barriers they face come when their experiences don't fit neatly into expected patterns.

Research shows that autistic people are significantly more likely to experience eating difficulties, including ARFID, and may also experience sensory differences, communication differences, anxiety, and other challenges that affect how they engage with services and support.

That's why person-centred care matters.

When we take time to listen, understand individual experiences, and remain open to different presentations of a condition, we create opportunities for better outcomes and more positive experiences for everyone involved.

The goal should never be to make people fit a system.

The goal should be creating systems that are flexible enough to understand people.
As part of the ARFIDandME campaign, we're encouraging greater awareness of ARFID, autism, neurodiversity and the importance of listening to lived experience when designing and delivering support.

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, understanding and respect.

Young carers are taking the lead to:
โœ”๏ธ Analyse card use and priority areas
โœ”๏ธ Map influence & decision-makers
โœ”๏ธ Draft campaign asks
โœ”๏ธ Plan a central information hub
โœ”๏ธ Engage with partners & decision-makers

TCC attended Diverse Together 2026 this week, joining more than 200 people from across North Wales to discuss community cohesion, wellbeing, inclusion and positive responses to growing community tensions.

The event provided valuable ideas and connections that will help shape our developing Belonging in the Community campaign.

As communities face increasing division and misinformation, conversations about belonging, understanding and connection have never felt more important.

Together building connections across communities in Wrexham ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป

This week we had the privilege of meeting at Wrexham Islamic Centre, bringing together leaders from St Maryโ€™s Cathedral Youth Group and EYST to explore how we can create shared spaces for young people.

We had powerful conversations about what it means to build relationships across faiths, cultures and communities โ€” and how important it is that young people feel safe, supported and able to connect with one another.

A huge thank you to Muhsin and Sham for their warm welcome, generosity, and for showing us around the space. It was inspiring to see the potential of the building and outdoor areas for youth activities and connection.

Weโ€™re really excited about the possibility of bringing young people together through games, shared experiences and ongoing relationship-building. This feels like the start of something meaningful โ€” rooted in trust, respect and belonging.

At TCC, we believe that relationships are the foundation of community power, and this is exactly how that begins.

What Have We Learned So Far?

Across the Wrexham Poverty Action Collaboration, common themes continue to emerge.

Housing insecurity. Food poverty. Transport barriers. Financial pressure. Digital exclusion. Mental health challenges.

Over the past year, with support from Funding from Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales, organisations across Wrexham have been working with their communities to capture real experiences of poverty and the cost of living through the Wrexham Poverty Action Collaboration Captured Lived Experience Grant.

โ€œThis work is about more than listeningโ€”itโ€™s about turning lived experience into action that can shapes services and decisions.โ€
David Hughes, Wrexham Poverty Action Collaboration

Now, those voices are coming together at the Tackling Poverty Lived Experience Assembly.

Join the assembly [email protected] or scan the QR code

The Tackling Poverty Assembly will explore what these experiences tell us and how communities and decision-makers can work together to create meaningful change.
