Are we doing enough to protect our children?

After the recent loss of young lives in Guyana, the Rights of the Child Commission is calling for timely investigations and a renewed national commitment to keeping every child safe.

Protecting children is not only the job of government agencies. It is a shared responsibility of families, schools, faith groups, communities and every one of us.

The RCC is calling for:
✅ Thorough, impartial and timely investigations
✅ An urgent review of how risks to children are spotted and acted on
✅ Stronger coordination between the agencies that serve children
✅ Greater public awareness, and more people speaking up
✅ Real investment in social work, counselling and family support
✅ Accountability and follow-through we can measure

Following recent reports of the deaths of children in Guyana, the Rights of the Child Commission (RCC) extends its deepest condolences to the affected families and calls for timely investigations, an urgent review of child-protection mechanisms, and strengthened measures to safeguard every child.

Every child has the fundamental right to life, safety, dignity, and development. Protecting children requires more than expressions of sympathy; it demands coordinated action, accountability, effective child-protection services, and a collective commitment from the State, families, communities, and every citizen.

Every child deserves to be safe. Every child deserves protection. Every child matters.

The United Nations in Guyana, in partnership with the University of Guyana, is empowering 80 students through its inaugural Model United Nations (MUN) Programme, providing opportunities to explore diplomacy, multilateralism, negotiation and global cooperation.

Representing the Rights of the Child Commission (RCC), Child Rights Ambassador Shannae Trotz and Ziya Bacchus are participating in this initiative, strengthening their understanding of multilateral diplomacy, international cooperation and how nations work together to address shared global challenges.

The programme will culminate in a Model UN simulation on 24 October, in observance of UN Day, where participants will put their knowledge and diplomatic skills into practice.
