Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones was elected Vice President of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) for 2021-2022 during the 51st SEAMEO Council (SEAMEC) Conference on June 17, 2021.
Briones was also voted the Vice Chairperson for the recently concluded SEAMEC Conference. As part of SEAMEO’s tradition, the current SEAMEC’s Vice President will assume presidency in the next Council Meeting in 2023.
On the other hand, Minister of Education of Singapore His Excellency (H.E.) Chan Chung Sing was voted as the President and Chairman of the SEAMEC.
H.E. Chan Chung Sing emphasized that the education sector in the region has adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic, as Ministers of Education from different countries managed to keep schools safe and ensure learning continuity.
H.E. Sing cited blended learning approaches ensured learning opportunities will continue amidst the pandemic.
Meanwhile, as the next host country, Briones proposed to host the 52nd SEAMEC in Dumaguete City in 2023.

Singapore has assumed Presidency of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Council for a two-year term (2021 to 2022), taking over from Malaysia. Yesterday, Ministry of Education, Singapore was pleased to host the virtual 51st SEAMEO Council Conference and 5th Strategic Dialogue for Education Ministers.
I had a fruitful exchange with my counterparts - we discussed ways to better prepare learners for a future changed by , while keeping education inclusive and accessible for all, especially for the less privileged amongst us. We also agreed on the Singapore Statement, which reaffirms our collective commitment to improving educational outcomes in Southeast Asia.
We have several activities lined up for students and educators in the region over the next two years. Through virtual platforms, we intend to continue to keep our students and teachers connected with one another and the world at large, to enable bilateral and multilateral exchanges even without travelling. Gregorio, presented its 11th Five-Year Plan focused Accelerating Transformation Through Agriculture Innovation (ATTAIN) together with joint activities and ways to go forward in the SEAMEO Online Course organized by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Secretariat (SEAMES; SEAMEOSecretariat) and the Philippine Department of Education-International Cooperation Office (DepEd-ICO) held on 10-12 May 2021 via Zoom.

participated in the SEAMEO Congress 2021 organized by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) in collaboration with the Malaysian Ministry of Education and the Thai Ministry of Education on 28-29 April 2021. The event brought together diverse education actors and stakeholders to craft common pathways to improve the quality of learning for the alpha generation.
Dr. Glenn B Gregorio, SEARCA Director, served as an overall moderator for the Market Place Session A: Partner Presentations, while Mr. Joselito G. Florendo, SEARCA Deputy Director for Administration, served as moderator of the Teaching and Learning Innovation and Research segment of Session D: Innovation and Research in Language Teaching.
