Maine Water Utilities Association

Maine Water Utilities Association The Maine Water Utilities Association (MWUA) is a non – profit membership organization which was organized in 1925.

The Mission of the Maine Water Utilities Association is to represent the water works professional membership in advocating safe drinking water through education, legislation, policy and networking. At that time a core group of water superintendents recognized the need to meet on a regular basis, share information and ideas and lend mutual support. That group met regularly and became increasingly i

nvolved in matters affecting water utilities. Today, the basic concept remains largely unchanged. MWUA is an advocate for the water supply profession. We share experiences at bimonthly meetings, sponsor training sessions for members and provide mutual support. The networking and interaction are of great benefit to system operators in providing water service, while complying with stringent state and federal regulations. In February of each year we hold a waterworks trade show in Portland, Maine which draws exhibitors from the United States and Canada and waterworks professionals from throughout the Northeast.

Yesterday, members of the Lisbon Water Department Woodard & Curran team participated in a regional drinking water emergency tabletop exercise hosted by Tom Bahun of Tom's Water Solutions LLC.

The exercise walked local utilities and representatives from partner agencies like the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS), Maine Water Utilities Association, MEWARN, Maine CDC Drinking Water Program, the GEOLOGICAL SURVEY MAINE, County EMAs, electrical power companies and fuel suppliers like Central Maine Power and Dead River Company through a realistic hypothetical emergency scenario and reinforced something important: relationships, communication, and planning matter long before an actual emergency happens.

These types of exercises are a great opportunity to test your thinking, identify gaps in your utilities planning, and build connections with the organizations you may rely on during a real event. If your utility isn’t already participating in regional emergency preparedness exercises, it’s absolutely worth getting involved.

Big thanks to Tom’s Water Solutions, all of the participating agencies and utilities for helping strengthen regional resiliency and preparedness, and to Maine Water for hosting us in their beautiful facility in Biddeford, ME.
