Now that the school year is underway, the role school buildings play in their communities goes well beyond the classroom.

At Truro Central School, plans for solar and future battery storage could help the school serve as a community resilience hub and emergency shelter during outages. At James Otis Elementary School in East Boston, a major HVAC upgrade is bringing modern cooling, ventilation, and air filtration to a 121-year-old building.

Through Green School Works, MassCEC is supporting investments that can create healthier learning environments while helping schools remain valuable community spaces for years to come.

Cambridge Day recently spotlighted five companies based in Cambridge and Somerville that are developing innovative climatetech solutions, from high-capacity batteries to semiconductor power chips.🔋⚡

Each company is a recipient of Massachusetts’ first ever Climatetech Tax Incentives, which provides funding for job creation and capital investment.

Where can clean energy learning take you? Sometimes, into the facilities where clean energy technologies are put to the test. 🎓🌬️

Last fall, students in Dartmouth College’s inaugural Master of Energy Transition program visited MassCEC’s Wind Technology Testing Center in Charlestown, getting an up-close look at how wind turbine blades are tested and learning more about the role testing plays in supporting the offshore wind industry.

Experiences like these help students connect what they’re learning in the classroom with real-world technologies, facilities, and career opportunities.

As Dartmouth welcomes a new cohort to its Master of Energy Transition program this fall, we’re looking back at highlights from last year’s visit.

What if cleaner classroom air could also come with energy savings?

Last year, Cambridge-based Metalmark put that idea to the test at Chariho Middle School and Charlestown Elementary School in Rhode Island, piloting its Tatama air-cleaning technology in real classrooms.

With support from MassCEC’s InnovateMass program, the project explored how innovative technology could improve indoor air quality while reducing the energy needed to keep classrooms comfortable.

Back-to-school season isn’t just about heading back to the classroom—it’s also about where learning can lead. 🎓

This summer, Bristol Community College and North Shore Community College became the first colleges to graduate cohorts from training supported by MassCEC’s Heat Pump and HVAC Training Network.

They made it happen in partnership with local vocational-technical schools: Bristol with Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School, and NSCC with Essex North Shore Agricultural & Technical School, Lynn Vocational Technical Institute, and Salem High School.
