Today, let's learn about the Asexual flag.
The Asexual flag was adopted by the community in 2010, after being voted in to represent the Asexual community as a whole. The Asexual community is varied and dynamic, with 'Asexual' being a blanket term covering a wide variety of people- similar to Transgender being a wide variety of people.
Some Asexual people do not experience any sexual attraction at all.
Others may experience it faintly, briefly, or only after knowing someone for awhile. This is often called "Grey-Sexual" or "Grey-Ace". Ace being a term that also refers to asexual, and is also why the "Ace" symbol found on playing cards has come to symbolize Asexuality.
The white stripe on this flag is meant for Allosexuality, a term that means the opposite of Asexual. It is the opposite of Asexuality. The vast majority of people are Allosexual, in the same way the vast majority of people are Cisgender rather than Transgender.
The purple strip is to represent community as a whole. The Asexual flag has become a staple at pride events, and has inspired a number of flags for the variety of sexuality that fall under the Asexual umbrella.
Another thing to note is that Asexual is different from Aromantic, or Agender.
Asexual only refers to sexual partners.
Aromantic only refers to romantic partners.
Agender refers to ones own gender- or the lack there of.
Somebody could be just one of these things, or all three!
