If you have ever ridden or lived in Houston by the Houston Volunteer Fire Company, you may have seen this metal ring structure sitting on display, but you probably don't know what it is. You might be asking yourself "why is Delmarva Rail Productions featuring something related to fire house history?" Well, this metal ring does have ties to railroading history!
Back in the late 19th and 20th century, this was basically their "siren", a steel ring recycled from worn out and replaced steam locomotive wheels (nicknamed tires). The concept was simple, take a loud hammer or iron rode and strike the ring, which made a loud clanging sound to alert nearby volunteer firefighters to come to the station. A gap, seen on the bottom, was cut out on purpose to amplify the sound. This is one of many you can find throughout the country on display, and Kent County Delaware has one of them.
