Mindfulness for Kids: Benefits, Activities, Toddlers, More

With kids, the goal of mindfulness is to help them move beyond thoughts of the past or future that may be draining, negative, or worrisome. Instead, it’s giving children the tools they need to connect with what’s going on in their world at the present moment. It’s about empowering them to accept their current thoughts and feelings and to form healthy habits for coping with all the big emotions they may have.

Huge drop in Michigan vaccinations scares experts during coronavirus

Even as COVID-19 cases in Michigan rise past 66,000, health experts warn of a troubling decline in vaccinations among all age groups. That poses not only a broad public health threat on top of the coronavirus, but could complicate plans to open schools in the fall, school officials say.

If your child is not up-to-date, make us your medical home and schedule an appointment today.

Michigan vaccinations in May were down 46 percent, raising health concerns about the flu and other illnesses. More troubling: rates for children 9 to 18 were down 66 percent, casting doubt on whether they will be allowed to enroll in school in the fall.

We're coming up on a heat wave and a holiday weekend, which makes this the perfect time to remind everyone to NEVER leave children or pets in a vehicle. Even in the shade, even for a quick moment, even with the windows rolled down... Just DON'T.

And please test the pavement before allowing your pet to walk on it. A good rule of thumb is to put your hand on the pavement for seven seconds before heading outside with your dog. If it’s too hot for your hand, then it’s also too hot for paws. If you do need to go out while it’s still hot, try and walk in the grass as much as possible.

Here are a few great visual reminders for those with furbabies this summer. Please share!

Surveys from around the world show that men everywhere find it difficult to open up about mental health, though they are significantly more at risk of attempting suicide than women.

It is important as a society to shift the idea of receiving support from “a sign of weakness” to a necessary step in maintaining overall health and wellness, especially for men.

5 Tips For Being An Ally

June is Pride Month. Being an ally is more than simply uttering the words "I'm an Ally", and these 5 tips are a great place to start. But before we can become an ally, a protector, a voice, we need to humanize the community so that we care, not just about them as the LGBTQ community, but as fellow human beings. This is another important step in the movement toward antiracism.

No-Cost means no out-of-pocket expense to persons being tested. However, to sustain this important service for the community, we need to bill the insurances of those who have it. Please have your insurance card on hand.

Governor Whitmer Signs Executive Order Reestablishing the Michigan Statewide Independent Living Council

This order will ensure compliance with current requirements under federal law and strengthen working relationships among the Council and entities providing services to individuals with disabilities, centers for independent living and other programs. The order takes effect July 15, 2020.

“Living with a disability in no way diminishes a person’s right to live independently, enjoy self-determination, make choices, contribute to society and pursue a meaningful career,” Governor Whitmer said. “I’m reestablishing the Michigan Statewide Independent Living Council to ensure Michiganders with disabilities can enjoy full inclusion and integration in the economic, political, social, cultural and educational institutions of our society.”

The Council will be comprised of members who provide statewide representation, represent a broad range of individuals with disabilities from diverse backgrounds and are knowledgeable about centers for independent living and independent living services. Most of the members of the Council must be individuals with disabilities who are not employed by a center for independent living or any agency of the State of Michigan.

The Council will be made up of 11 voting members appointed by the governor, including:
· One director of a center for independent living chosen by the directors of centers for independent living within this state.
· One individual representing parents or guardians of individuals with disabilities.
· One individual representing advocates of, and for, individuals with disabilities.
· One individual representing organizations that provide services for individuals with disabilities, including, but not limited to, private businesses.
· Seven other residents of this state, including residents who represent the underserved or tribal communities.

The Council will also include five non-voting ex officio members appointed by the governor which represent a designated state entity and representatives from state agencies providing services for individuals with disabilities.

Anyone interested can apply for the Michigan Statewide Independent Living Council by going to Michigan.gov/appointments and click ‘apply now’ under boards and commissions. You will be able to choose Michigan Statewide Independent Living Council (SILC) under the appointment information tab within the application. Applications are due by Wednesday, July 8.

25 Books to Deepen Our Commitment to Racial Justice - FoodCorps

The simplest definition of mindfulness is “to be aware.”

Awareness of injustice is a step forward, but that alone is not enough to create meaningful change. Undoing racism takes work: a lifetime of learning hard truths, challenging systems, and asking questions that bring us closer to a just world.

This Mindful Monday we're bringing to your attention several books to help deepen our collective commitment to antiracism.

#MindfulMonday #mindfulness #awareness #justice #equality #antiracism #MondayMindfulness

Undoing racism takes work. That means reading up on racial justice and learning how we contribute to—and benefit from—structural inequities.

06/19/2020

Today, as we celebrate Juneteenth, we should recognize both the progress made and the immense work still to be done to achieve equality and justice for all. To all those observing #Juneteenth, we wish you a day of joy and purpose.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation — which had become official January 1, 1863!

Getting involved and celebrating Juneteenth creates new bonds of friendship and understanding among us. Read more about Juneteenth and how it's celebrated today https://www.genhs.org/Portals/0/Juneteenth%20GCHC.pdf?ver=2020-06-19-094750-770
