Thank you, Genesee County Parks and Recreation Commission! Our associate director, Carrie Gerdeman, shared some great feedback about our parks! "I noticed a few weeks ago that the bathrooms at Buell Lake were not accessible- they had a large lip at the entrance and no concrete walkway leading up to the restroom building. Well, within 3 weeks, they added a beautiful new paved walkway and new concrete pad at the entrance so that Buell Lake now has an accessible bathroom!"

Ableism & Racism: Roots of The Same Tree

"This matters. This is our history. Talking about your brother, matters. And so I think what allies can really do is do the homework, use Google, do your reading, talk to people and talk about disability and ableism when you're talking about racism when you're talking about homophobia when you're talking about s*xism; acknowledge the commonalities, acknowledge the differences."

Disability Advocates Warn the For the People Act's Paper Ballot Mandate Will Disenfranchise Voters with Disabilities - AAPD

Car crash survivors, care providers urge legislature to fix no-fault reforms

"Wednesday morning leaders of the We Can’t Wait Facebook Group held a virtual news conference where they pleaded for lawmakers to take up legislation that will fix the unintended consequences of Michigan’s 2019 auto insurance reform law that goes into effect July 1.

The group of more than 2,200 car crash survivors, family members, and care providers formed one month ago with the goal to organize and raise awareness of the loss of services that will result when care providers are unable to stay in business due to the law’s mandated 45 % cut in medical reimbursement."

Members of the group are pleading to amend the law as some injury care providers have already announced plans to cease operations.

Spotlight on Focus Area #6: 24/7 Mental Health Crisis Center for Crisis Stabilization

Currently, there is no facility in Genesee County dedicated to assisting someone suffering from a mental health crisis. Emergency Rooms at area hospitals are not staffed with professionals experienced in dealing with mental health issues.

Limited space available vs. traditional emergency medical needs.

What we could do:
Create a 24/7, 365 days a year mental health facility in partnership with Hurley Medical Center.

Provide professional services to Genesee County residents who are suffering from mental health challenges.

Our Story

We are a nonprofit Center for Independent Living that provides supports to the Genesee County community. At The Disability Network, Independent Living is a philosophy and a way of life. It is a movement of people with disabilities who work for self-determination, equal opportunities and self-respect. The Independent Living philosophy says that every person, regardless of disability, has the potential and the right to exercise individual self-determination.

Since 1992, we have worked to support the community with these five core services: Independent Living Skills development, Information and referral to community resources, Community and Youth Transitions, Peer Support and Advocacy (both systems and self). Our goal is to support people of any age and any disability in achieving their ideal of independent living.

I couldn't tell you how many times I've been to a website and I have challenges navigating it. I use Dragon NaturallySpeaking/voice recognition software to work on my computer. There's often times that the fight needs to be bigger, or contrast change. I've been on the website too many videos and pictures and it slows everything down. It's nice when you have a website that gives you many accessible features to break down the barriers and challenges. Which allows me to enjoy and stay on the website longer. accessiBe is helping bring web accessibility to the world. watch accessiBe's new commercial which brings web accessibility to national TV! #WeAreUnStoppable Please watch and share
