Spotlight on Focus Area #6: 24/7 Mental Health Crisis Center for Crisis Stabilization

Currently, there is no facility in Genesee County dedicated to assisting someone suffering from a mental health crisis. Emergency Rooms at area hospitals are not staffed with professionals experienced in dealing with mental health issues.

Limited space available vs. traditional emergency medical needs.

What we could do:
Create a 24/7, 365 days a year mental health facility in partnership with Hurley Medical Center.

Provide professional services to Genesee County residents who are suffering from mental health challenges.

How Can We Secure a More Equitable Future for People With Disabilities?

"COVID-19 has exacerbated inequality for people with disabilities around the world. They are struggling to access health care, are more exposed to the virus, and have disproportionately felt the social and economic impacts of the pandemic.

As the world begins to recover, South African activist Eddie Ndopu wants to ensure people with disabilities aren’t left behind."

Activist Eddie Ndopu says people with disabilities are experiencing economic and health consequences and aren’t being accounted for in COVID-19 response.

Our Story

We are a nonprofit Center for Independent Living that provides supports to the Genesee County community. At The Disability Network, Independent Living is a philosophy and a way of life. It is a movement of people with disabilities who work for self-determination, equal opportunities and self-respect. The Independent Living philosophy says that every person, regardless of disability, has the potential and the right to exercise individual self-determination.

Since 1992, we have worked to support the community with these five core services: Independent Living Skills development, Information and referral to community resources, Community and Youth Transitions, Peer Support and Advocacy (both systems and self). Our goal is to support people of any age and any disability in achieving their ideal of independent living.
