Today is a very hard day for Flint. 10 years ago, the municipal water source was switched from Detroit water to the Flint River as a cost-cutting measure while the KWA pipe was built. The citizens in Flint opposed the move, but the governor appointed emergency city manager ignored the community's protests and switched it anyway.

The city and state failed to add required treatment to reduce the acidity of the water leading to protective scale on lead service lines disintegrating. Flint citizens were poisoned, then told over and over the water was fine and it was all in their heads or an individual house's plumbing issue - when it clearly was not.

Today, Flint still suffers from the water crisis - from the cancer causing chemicals the city pumped into the water system to deal with out of control bacteria growth, from the loss of loved ones due to Legionnaires disease, from the lead silently waiting in bones and the brains of residents. Not a cent of relief has reached our friends and neighbors.

The Water Crisis is not over.

The Genesee Historical Collections Center will be recording the oral histories of Flint survivors all this year. In addition, new digital archives will be rolled out for easy access and use by the Flint and University of Michigan community to further bring to light the many government failures that lead us here. Finally, please visit the community art and history display on the second floor of the library starting May 1st.

As always the GHCC will continue collecting physical and digital water crisis materials (photos, letters, art/protest signs, tshirts, and more). Email the archivist at [email protected] for more information.

American poet and political activist John Sinclair passed away today at 82. Sinclair was born in Flint on October 2, 1941, and attended the University of Michigan Flint in the mid-1960s when the campus was still a 2-year junior college. He then moved on to the Ann Arbor campus. In 1967, he began publishing the Ann Arbor Sun. He went on to manage the MC5 and was a founder of the White Panther Party - an anti-racist, socialist counterpart to the Black Panthers. In 1969, he was arrested in Ann Arbor for drug possession of two joints and was sentenced to 10 years. A community uproar was joined by celebrities like Abby Hoffman and John Lennon (his song John Sinclair laments, "They gave him ten for two – what else can the bastards do?"). After a rally in Ann Arbor that involved Stevie Wonder and Bob Seger among the many assembled musicians, the Michigan Supreme Court declared the law unconstitutional, and Sinclair was released. These events inspired the annual Hash Bash celebration in Ann Arbor. The rest of his life was spent writing, creating art, and advocating for ma*****na legalization. On January 20, 2009, to mark Barack Obama's inauguration as the 44th President of the United States, Sinclair performed a series of his poems accompanied by a live band. He passed away of heart failure at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Below is Sinclair's University Yearbook photo from 1964.
