Jefferson County offices will be closed June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865—over two years later—that the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free. That day became the origin of what we now commemorate as Juneteenth.

This day stands as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equity and justice and a celebration of Black freedom, culture, and resilience. Let’s take this time to reflect, learn, and honor the significance of Juneteenth in our shared American history.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for unincorporated Jefferson County for Wednesday, June 17 from 8:00 a.m. to midnight. The county will be in stage 1 fire restrictions because of the Red Flag Warning. Critical weather and fire danger conditions exist.

Orange? Purple? Why the different ballot envelope colors?

For Primary Elections, all affiliated voters receive orange 🟧 return envelopes. Since four parties are holding primaries this year, registered Republican, Democratic, Libertarian, and Unity Party voters will receive an orange envelope.

Unaffiliated voters receive purple 🟪 return envelopes. These voters receive one ballot for each major political party, but have to choose which one they'll vote and return. The different envelope color helps election judges sort and process ballots efficiently so they can confirm that only one ballot was returned.

The purple unaffiliated envelopes are only used in a primary election, so all our unaffiliated voters will get orange in November! Using different envelope colors is a longstanding practice here in Jeffco as well as many other counties across the state.

We also have other return envelope colors used for other special voting situations, such as military and overseas voters (black envelopes), replacement ballots (teal envelopes), and property owners (brown envelopes).

Today, we highlight Juneteenth, a day of profound significance in American history. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, announcing that all enslaved people in Texas were free—more than two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

This moment marked the effective end of legal slavery in the last Confederate state, bringing the promise of freedom to the final group of enslaved African Americans.

Juneteenth represents the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of Black communities who turned news of emancipation into annual celebrations of faith, family, food, music, and education.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is not a one-time event but an ongoing commitment to equality, dignity, and inclusion for all.
