What happens to a relationship when one partner’s faith begins to change?

A faith transition can affect much more than belief. For couples, it may raise questions about intimacy, parenting, roles, family, belonging, shared values, and the future of the relationship.

My newest blog explores what can happen between partners when their beliefs are no longer the same—and how couples can work toward connection without requiring sameness.

When two people marry within a shared faith tradition, how much do religious beliefs shape their expectations of what a 'good marriage' should look like?

Over the next 12 weeks, I’ll be asking a weekly question about something we don’t often talk about: the ways religious beliefs can organize and shape a marriage.

Religion and spirituality can be meaningful sources of connection, shared values, identity, and support for couples. They can also influence expectations about intimacy, decision-making, gender roles, sexuality, family relationships, and what it means to be a “good” spouse.

And when religious beliefs change—or when someone has experienced harm within a religious system—the impact doesn’t necessarily remain an individual experience. It can show up in the relationship between partners.

As I prepare to present Religious Trauma in Couples: Systemic Considerations at the Global Systemic Therapy Conference this fall, I’d like to invite you into the conversation.

Each week, I’ll post one question for reflection and discussion. There are no right answers, and you certainly don't need to share anything personal. I’m simply interested in creating space to think more deeply about the intersection of religion, relationships, and religious trauma.

Watch for the first question posted yesterday.
