Today, weโ€™re celebrating the birthday of a Green Bay legend! ๐ŸŽ‚๐ŸŽ‰ ๐Ÿ“ฐ

Walter Wellesley โ€œRedโ€ Smith was born in 1905 and went on to become one of the most celebrated sportswriters of his time. A graduate of Green Bay East High School, Smith spent more than 50 years in journalism and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished commentary in 1976.

His legacy lives on right here in Green Bay at Red Smith Park, named in his honor. Happy birthday to โ€œRedโ€ Smith, a Green Bay native whose words made a lasting mark on the world of sports!

Happy First Day of Fall, the season of colorful changes! Have you ever wonderedโ€ฆ
๐ŸŒฟ Why do leaves change color?
As days get shorter and temperatures cool, trees prepare for winter by slowing down food production and breaking down chlorophyll, the pigment that makes leaves green. As the green fades, hidden yellow and orange pigments are revealed, and red and purple pigments are created.

๐Ÿ‚ Why do some trees change color before others?
Some trees change earlier because of their natural genetic schedule, but factors such as moisture, sunlight, temperature, insects, or disease can cause changes ahead of schedule.

๐Ÿ Why do leaves fall from trees?
As days get shorter and temperatures cool, trees prepare for winter by conserving water and energy. They pull nutrients from their leaves and form a special layer of cells where each leaf connects to the branch. Eventually, the connection weakens and the leaf falls. By shedding their leaves, trees conserve resources and reduce the risk of damage from winter snow and ice. If the leaves are mulched and left in place, they even add nutrients back to the soil and the tree!

As you enjoy the beautiful fall colors, take a closer look; a lot is happening in those leaves!
