Fair Housing Example #2

Race and color are both protected classes under the Fair Housing Act, which means that no housing professional can change how they market, sell, or price homes based on someone's racial identity, skin-tone, spoken language, or any other indicator of ethnicity.

Here's just one example of a way that this law may appear in practice -- and a possible violation you can spot. Learn more at bit.ly/Houston-Fair-Housing.

Briarwest Apartments will provide 120 new apartment homes in West Houston, an area where rents are rising and affordable homes are hard to find. This mixed-income community will provide homes that our essential workers and their families can afford, in an area rich with resources. Excited to see the progress on this development!

Fair Housing Month: Situation #1

Disability is one of the seven protected classes under the Fair Housing Act, which means that homes must be built with accessibility in mind -- and if residents need accomodations, housing professionals have to be willing to help. Here's just one example of a way that this law may appear in practice -- and a possible violation you can spot.

Congratulations to Ms. Marilyn Gatlin, whose home was repaired via our newest Single-Family Home Repair Program option, what we call "gut rehabilitation" -- making major repairs to a home's interior to make it safer, but keeping the outside's original look and feel. Welcome back home, Ms. Gatlin!

Thanks to all our partners and to every volunteer who came out to this event in Alief yesterday. Working together, we can #KeepHoustonHoused during this pandemic.

For continued resources, please refer to www.HoustonHarrisHelp.org, which still has rental assistance available as far back as April 2020!

We just finished the last car, and our rent assistance and legal aid event in Alief was a huge success! Thanks to the hard work of more than 50 volunteers, we were able to help keep over 400 people in their homes.

Thanks to Councilmember Tiffany D. Thomas and the whole District F team for working incredibly hard to make this event a success, to Good News Full Gospel Fellowship Church for hosting and supporting the event, to Harris County Commissioner PCT 3 for providing generators and assistance, to Rep. Gene Wu for getting dinner for everyone, and to City of Houston Housing & Community Development for coordinating printing and technology.

There were a lot of incredible volunteers who came out to keep the event humming. We helped a lot of people thanks to hard work of volunteers from Ironworkers Local 84, OPEIU Local #129, Alief Independent School District Family and Community Engagement, The Metropolitan Organization - TMO Houston, THETA CHI QUES, Eta Rho Sigma Chapter, Heads Up Houston, Houston Area Urban League, and students from Prairie View A&M University - Master of Community Development.

And thanks to attorneys from South Texas College of Law Houston, Houston Volunteer Lawyers, and Lone Star Legal Aid, who worked late into the night to help keep Harris County housed.

What We Do

Welcome to the official page of the City of Houston’s Housing and Community Development Department (HCDD). We are a team of over 200, led by Director Tom McCasland.

Our mission is simple: we are working to create a city where every Houstonian has a safe, affordable home in a community where they can thrive. From day-to-day, this means developing affordable housing projects, working to end homelessness, supporting community centers and amenities, organizing disaster relief assistance, and more. Our team is hard at work to improve quality of life in Houston for all residents and communities.

HCDD’s offers services across many divisions and handles over $200 million of federal, state, and local funds annually. We do work in the following areas:

  • Affordable homes – which means both multifamily units and single-family homes.
  • Nearby government services
