Tonight and tomorrow, 13 pairs of Marines and Sailors in dress uniforms will be making the most difficult house call.

Remember... as veterans, we still have each other. Stay strong. Take care of each other. Semper Fi.

EDIT: New updates indicate that there were one U.S. Army Soldier amongst those 13. Rest easy.

*** Story Time ***

Medal of Honor recipient: Sgt. Silvestre S. Herrera, Texas Military Department (National Guard) 36th Infantry Division 142th Inf. Reg.

💪 💪 "...he made a one-man frontal assault on a strongpoint and captured eight enemy soldiers." 💪 💪

Herrera was born in Mexico who's parents died in an influenza pandemic and was raised by his uncle who brought him to the US at a young age for a better life.

When Herrera was drafted into the Texas Army National Guard Recruiting in WW2. Even though he technically could not be drafted (as a Mexican Citizen), Herrera answered the call for service thinking, "I didn't want anybody to die in my place... I felt that I had my adopted country that had been so nice to me. I thought, I have an American wife and the kids and one on the way."

In March 1945, Herrera’s unit advanced to the French/German border village Mertzwiller (Operation Undertone) where they were pinned down by heavy machine gun fire, and Herrera pulled off the ultimate heroic act that earned him this Medal of Honor citation:

“He advanced with a platoon along a wooded road until stopped by heavy enemy machine-gun fire. As the rest of the unit took cover, he made a one-man frontal assault on a strongpoint and captured eight enemy soldiers.

When the platoon resumed its advance and was subjected to fire from a second emplacement beyond an extensive minefield, Pvt. Herrera again moved forward, disregarding the danger of exploding mines, to attack the position.

He stepped on a mine and had both feet severed; but, despite intense pain and unchecked loss of blood, he pinned down the enemy with accurate rifle fire while a friendly squad captured the enemy gun by skirting the minefield and rushing in from the flank.

The magnificent courage, extraordinary heroism, and willing self-sacrifice displayed by Pvt. Herrera resulted in the capture of two enemy strongpoints and the taking of eight prisoners.”

After WW2, Herrera returned to the Arizona Governor Sidney P. Osborn declaring August 14, 1945 to be "Herrera Day" and welcomed him home a hero's parade. A drive to bestow upon him citizenship of the only country he knew was started and as a result he was granted United States Citizenship.

Herrera lived to be 90 years old and passed away in his home in Arizona in 2007.

Good morning! Allow me to introduce myself. First & foremost, I’m a retired Army First Sergeant, and continue working for the military as a defense contractor – recruiting for KBR. Additionally, before joining KBR in 2019, I worked for the Fort Hood Transition Assistance Program for 12 years. I also served as TAP’s Marketing Coordinator for 5 of those years, bringing employers opportunities to Fort Hood and administrating all our career-related events. That said, I completely understand service members and the stress that surrounds nearly every aspect of transitioning back into civilian life. I recruit for the Marines Corps’ Prepositioning Program (MCPP), which provides maintenance and logistics services for critical ground combat vehicles and support equipment for the Marines. In our Florida and overseas operations, we provide forward logistics support to the USMC in support of contingency operations and sustainment operations. While I recruit specifically for our Shipboard (deployed) assignments, we have opportunities on Camp Arifjan, Kuwait and in Jacksonville, Florida. The majority our of jobs support ground vehicles and logistic (supply) operations, though as a global employer, KBR has opportunities for transitioners of nearly every military occupation. Our MCPP contract has an emphasis on Engineer (construction) Equipment, Tracked Vehicles, and all Wheeled Vehicles, but also looks for Radio Repair Techs, Ammo Techs, & Supply veterans. If I can ask you to share our career flyer with your transitioning Soldiers, I’m available to answer their questions about our jobs and the application process. As a veteran, I hate to see any service member depart the military without a solid transition plan – meaning a career awaiting them and their family. Thank you. Robert (Bob) Schumacher
