It is National Physicians Week!! Starting today and goes through March 31. After all that we have been through as a nation and global society, doctors deserve a week of recognition more than ever. Doctors deal with years of school, grueling shifts, and emotionally difficult decisions, and still manage to care for us with focus and kindness. Lets show the doctors we appreciate them as much as they deserve with creative gifts, simple notes, and appreciation posts online.

Did you know the founder on the Bling for Bravery program Larry DeSpain, ran his last Chevron Houston Marathon as a part of the Run for a Reason fundraising for Snowdrop Foundation?

In the last 14 years, he was one of the top three individual fundraisers 11 consecutive years, was the top individual fundraiser five times and was the top individual fundraiser three years in a row. He was also 2nd twice and 3rd twice. To our knowledge, no one has ever accomplished any of these feats.

Larry has raised over $298,000 for Snowdrop Foundation, (this year is not included in that total).

So, as he says good bye to Run for A Reason, we would like to help him get to the #1 fundraiser spot for 2022!!! Fundraising ends Feb 1st.

Please join us and say thank you, by clicking on his fundraising link and donating.

The world lost a great one, yesterday.

He was my first running coach and Snowdrop’s first TRUE believer.

I can honestly say, if it weren’t for Andy Stewart, Snowdrop, and MANY other local charities, would not be as recognized, well supported and successful, as we are today.

When I decided to run my first marathon, I found out I needed a pair of stability shoes. I have a policy that if there is a locally owned place for what I need, that is who gets my business. Living in Sugar Land at the time, I found out about Finish Line Sports.

The day I went in to get new shoes, I struck up a conversation with Lajuan at the front desk. We got to talking about my running (imagine that runners talking about running), training for my first marathon and why I was doing it.

When I casually mentioned my running paces after about 30 minutes of conversation, out of his office, a man emerged who sounded shocked that I was running so well without coaching or training partners.

It was Andy.

He told me about Fort Bend Fit and his Tuesday track sessions.

Andy wasn’t recommending I join them for anyone’s benefit but MINE.

I quickly joined both.

Andy was also moved by my story of why I was running, Chelsey Campbell, the pediatric cancer patient who inspired Snowdrop Foundation.

It was Andy who invited me to join him at the Chevron Houston Marathon pre-race Greek Pistachio Dinner. It was Andy, who, while there, introduced me to Brant Kotch who gave me some time to speak about Snowdrop.

After the speech, Andy smiled and said, “That went well.”. This was in 2007.

In 2008, we became an official Chevron Houston Marathon Run For A Reason Charity. All because of Andy.

Because of Andy, Terrie Gorney gave me some time to speak after a Fort Bend Fit Saturday run. That speech gave us the introduction to Larry Despain, who has become the most prolific fundraiser for Snowdrop and one of the top 3 overall fundraisers for the Run For A Reason program since 2008.

Andy delighted in helping people, in helping runners and helping organizations.

Andy was proud of the accomplishments of all his runners. He beamed when talking about someone’s PR, or new race record at his Turkey Trot or 30K.

There was only one thing that made Andy glow more than his runners. It was his family.

He introduced us to mom and dad, to Aunt Jean, to Steve and Lyn (who have become equally as passionate about Snowdrop and close friends of ours today) and we ALL celebrated when he and Jean tied the knot. And oh, did he love to talk about Caitlin.

When I got the news yesterday from Trish, my wife, my stomach fell to the ground and pulled my heart right down with it.

Andy was a giver. The shame of it all is that mental illness is only a taker.

The world became a less better place yesterday, and our lives became a bit emptier.

To Jean, Caitlin, Steve and Lyn, our absolute deepest sympathy. No words will soften this blow, believe me, I know, but the lives that Andy touched, the organizations that benefited from his generosity and support, and the countless runners he helped achieve personal bests and competitive greatness will forever be reminders of how special Andy was and the legacy that will live on.

Let the bagpipes play…for our grief...and to celebrate Andy.

Today, we challenge you to think of the children we are fighting with against pediatric cancer. Smile because with each mile ran, each dollar donated, and each medal earned, we are fighting for those children who have suffered, survived, and fought their toughest battle. Each day they choose happiness and today, so do we.
