The Trump administration awarded border wall contracts to build on land it doesn't own in Texas

The Trump administration’s border wall project was always xenophobic, environmentally destructive, and an illegal move to usurp taxpayer dollars. We fight for border communities and join them in saying #NoBorderWall #NoAlMuro.

With the Biden administration incoming, a shift in border policy to restore the civil rights and liberties of border communities means an end to walls, wasteful militarization, intrusive surveillance technology, and the removal of Border Patrol from policing U.S. communities.

The government’s strategy of awarding contracts before acquiring titles to land in Texas has led to millions of dollars in costs for delays. Things could get even more complicated if President-elect Joe Biden stops border wall construction.

Body camera footage can't promote accountability when police themselves get to decide which footage is released.

When the police are given the discretion to publicly release favorable body camera footage but withhold negative footage, police body cameras become nothing more than a police propaganda tool.

The 2021 redistricting process will impact Texas politics for the next 10 years. Here’s how it’ll work.

Texas lawmakers are getting ready to redraw our state's voting maps, but many don't want you to know about the behind-the-scenes process. Here's what's at stake:

"Who you can elect at the national, statewide and even local levels depends on which district you live in. And the way those district maps are drawn often decides which party controls the national and state legislative bodies— and the maps will remain in use for as long as 10 years."

Republicans will control the process, but a legal and political fight is sure to commence over who is empowered and whose voice is diluted.

Allowing COVID-19 to Spread Unchecked in Texas Jails Threatens the Safety of All Texans

In county jails, bunk beds are typically side-by-side, forcing people to sleep inches from their neighbors even when they show COVID-19 symptoms.

Incarcerated folks depend on local leaders to enact precautions to keep them safe and some county leaders are failing to deliver.
Texas Jail Project has documented people's experiences of retaliation from jail officials simply for requesting that officials follow basic public health protocols like quarantining.

Some with severe COVID-19 symptoms have expressed concern about getting cellmates sick all while being denied tests, treatment, and basic acknowledgment of their suffering.

This is not only unjust, it’s unconstitutional. Read our latest:

Restrictions on the South Texas Border Were Meant to Protect People From COVID-19. Then the Handcuffs Came Out.

Police officers, sheriffs, and other officials should first educate the public regarding local orders in response to COVID-19, not immediately resort to fines and arrests. The disproportionate response by law enforcement in the Rio Grande Valley is appalling.

Governments along the Texas-Mexico border took a hard line to limit COVID-19’s spread. Police were key to the public health response, resulting in hundreds jailed and nearly 2,000 people ticketed.

Redistricting will shape our next 10 years, and the process has been fairly opaque in years past. If there isn’t real transparency, most of the conversations, decisions and work that goes into drawing the districts happen behind closed doors.

Lawmakers will use sophisticated mapping software to help them draw districts, with data due out from the U.S. Census Bureau on April 1

Abortion is a fundamental right and is very much legal in Texas; any law that attempts to interfere with that right is unconstitutional. The Lubbock measure is the work of anti-abortion extremists.

💥 Abortion care is healthcare.

If voters approve the ballot measure in May, Lubbock would be the largest city in Texas to ban abortions. But the ban would likely be unenforceable.

Analysis: When mapmaking Texas politicians are smiling and quiet, pay attention

When redistricting is done incorrectly, legislators redraw lines to dilute minority communities’ voting power. That’s why it’s important for everyone to hold them accountable to drawing fair district maps that ensure every person’s vote counts equally.

Remaking the state’s political maps — redistricting — is important. One way to tell is that the lawmakers making the maps do their dead-level best to avoid saying anything that might signal their intent.

Border Patrol gave big firepower to small Texas towns for George Floyd protests

“When you have the deployment of such militarized agencies to First Amendment-protected protests, you’re going well beyond best police practices for crowd control." – ACLU of Texas attorney Shaw Drake

CBP is the largest law enforcement agency in the U.S. – and the least accountable. CBP has long operated with violent impunity in border communities and it's being deployed as a federal police force to protests against police brutality toward Black & Brown people across the country.

We uncovered documents that reveal CBP’s planned massive presence and militarized police response at George Floyd’s burial service in Pearland, TX, on June 9, 2020.

The Biden administration must end CBP deployment as a federal police force to protests and throughout the country – including in border communities.

Documents obtained by the Chronicle show Customs and Border Protection coordinated with nearly a dozen Texas departments in response to planned protests against police brutality.

A border policy that restores the civil rights of border communities *and* upholds our values requires an end to walls, wasteful militarization, intrusive surveillance technology, and pulls Border Patrol's policing presence from U.S. communities.

Recent court decisions have found policies that treat students differently on the basis of their gender are unconstitutional.

School districts need to conform to federal law and fix outdated policies causing serious harm to Texas students.
