Today, IMPD is launching a new 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹 to improve roadside safety and save you time. If you’re involved in a minor vehicle crash with no injuries, you’ll now receive a 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸 straight to your phone, instead of waiting for an officer.

This easy-to-use tool gives you everything you need to file an insurance claim. It keeps you moving and allows our officers to stay focused on higher-priority calls.

The Driver Exchange Tool offers immediate documentation and 𝟮𝟰/𝟳 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 at 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘀.𝗼𝗿𝗴, where drivers can securely access and download their exchange at no cost.

So, what do you do if you’re involved in a minor, property-damage-only crash?

- Follow the step-by-step instructions to exchange information with the other driver

𝐈𝐌𝐏𝐃 𝐃𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐀𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐇𝐢𝐭-𝐚𝐧𝐝-𝐑𝐮𝐧 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐊𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐚 𝟗-𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫-𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐁𝐨𝐲

IMPD crash investigators have made an arrest in a tragic hit-and-run crash that killed a 9-year-old boy on Indy’s Northwest side. The arrest occurred less than three hours after the crash, thanks to diligent police work and automated license plate reader (ALPR) technology.

On Sunday, October 4, 2026, shortly after 1:30 p.m., IMPD Northwest District officers responded to the 6700 block of Eagle Pointe Drive North on reports of a child lying in the street. Upon arrival, officers located two young boys, a 6-year-old and a 9-year-old, who appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. They were both transported to an area hospital, where, tragically, the 9-year-old passed away.

The striking vehicle had fled the area before officers arrived, but after speaking with neighbors and viewing available video footage, officers gathered a description of the suspect and the vehicle involved. Officers even obtained the license plate number on the suspect vehicle. IMPD officers used ALPRs to determine the vehicle's direction of travel. The vehicle’s last known location was shared with IMPD East District and Lawrence Police officers.

A short time later, an updated search area for the vehicle was determined using ALPRs. Lawrence Police officers then located the vehicle in the 10300 block of Pendleton Pike, where they took the driver into custody.

Following further investigation, IMPD Crash Investigators arrested the male on the preliminary charge of leaving the scene of an accident causing death. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make the final charging decision.

An arrest and a charge are merely accusations, and the suspect should be presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

For nearly 40 years, our North District officers have operated out of our current facility off of 30th Street. While this building has served us well, it has run its course. From recurring flooding issues to outdated infrastructure, the limitations are impacting our daily operations, officer morale, and more importantly, how we connect with you.

Our current space lacks the room to host you. We want a facility that isn’t just for officers, but also a resource for the IMPD to engage with the community. The preliminary rendering gives you a look at what’s to come to the new facility. The final design may vary throughout the project.

That’s why we're thrilled that the City Council has approved a bond to fund a new North District headquarters in the Forest Manor neighborhood.

• 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬: Space for a dedicated training space to keep our officers mentally and physically prepared to serve you.

A new North District facility isn't just an investment in a physical building; it's an investment in the future of the Forest Manor neighborhood and the safety of our community.

Earlier today, an officer in IMPD’s Homeless Outreach Unit was canvasing the area, making sure our unhoused neighbors have resources during our rising temperatures.

Just a reminder, there are several cooling centers around Indy for anyone needing relief from the heat.

IMPD officers will continue to be present during this stretch of dangerous heat, checking on individuals and reminding our neighbors they are not alone.
