Juneau Public Libraries

Juneau Public Libraries The Juneau Public Libraries are the open door to exploration and lifelong learning. Library staff offices are located at the downtown branch.

The Juneau Public Libraries are a Department of the City and Borough of Juneau (www.juneau.org). We have three branches: the downtown Juneau Public Library (located atop the parking garage on the waterfront), the Mendenhall Valley Public Library (located at 3025 Dimond Park Loop) and the Douglas Public Library (located in the Douglas Community Building, a shared facility with the Fire Department).

The Juneau Public Libraries are part of the Joint Library consortium, including the three Juneau Public Libraries, the Anchorage Public Libraries, all University of Alaska libraries, the Alaska State Library, the Sealaska Heritage Institute, and more. A card obtained at any one of these facilities will allow you to check out or return materials at all facilities. (The Sealaska Heritage Institute is a non-circulating research library.) Comments posted to this page will be monitored. The CBJ reserves the right to remove inappropriate comments including those that have obscene language or sexual content, threaten or defame any person or organization, violate the legal ownership interest of another party, support or oppose political candidates or ballot propositions, promote illegal activity, promote commercial services or products or are not topically related to the particular posting.

📅 Wednesday, July 29th at 10 a.m.
📍Meet at Adair Kennedy Memorial Park

This walk will be about 3 miles round-trip with a break at the library for snacks and water. Walks to the Library are at a comfortable pace and for all ages. Huge thank you to Juneau Parks & Recreation , AARP Alaska, and University of Alaska Southeast for organizing this fantastic event with us.

The Hesco barriers are expected to be at the pedestrian bridge, so walking to the Valley Library from the Brotherhood Bridge Trail won't be possible. Please note the new location!

Last week, 25 of our patrons enjoyed a special tour of Pederson Hill Farm! 🌼🪴

We explored the grounds, admired the flowers and plants, learned about local gardening, and listened as Bobbi shared her love of flowers. A huge thank you to everyone at Pederson Hill Farm for generously donating this wonderful experience, it was an afternoon to remember.

A full circle moment.

The kootéeyaa (totem pole) that once stood outside Juneau's first public library has found a permanent home inside another.

"Harnessing of the Atom" was skillfully carved by Jeet Yaaw Dustaa Amos Wallace of the Tʼaḵdeintaan Clan of the X̱ʼáakw Hít (Freshwater-Marked Coho House) in 1967 from western red cedar. This 15ft kootéeyaa was installed outside the Juneau Memorial Library (now Juneau-Douglas City Museum) in 1976. Due to the effects of weather, insects, and time, it naturally started to decay, eventually requiring new supports in 2003.

Now, after more than 50 years of careful preservation by the City Museum, "Harnessing of the Atom" has a permanent home at the Valley Library. Come visit this beautiful piece of Juneau's history and culture and help us honor the craftsmanship and preservation efforts that have protected it over time.

Above: a photo of "Harnessing of the Atom" at its new home in the Valley library, alongside an image of Rie Muñoz's 1977 print "End of the Day, Juneau." Muñoz's print depicts the totem's original placement at the Juneau Memorial Library. Its 50+ year journey has been bookended by public libraries.
