Our Catalpa trees are putting on their annual floral show, as they begin to bloom, our interpretive horticulturist Jon pointed out that the unfurled flower looks like freshly popped popcorn!

Meet the Catalpa speciosa, known to some as the "Cigar Tree" or "Bean Tree." We have several of these majestic beauties on the property, including one unique leaning specimen in Catalpa Corner, these trees are native to the central United States and known best for their seriously long, slender seed pods and large heart-shaped leaves that make it a true standout.

The Catalpa’s spectacular white flowers look almost like orchids, beautiful and fragrant, wafting delightful notes of citrus and jasmine. As the evening falls, these blooms release even more of their enchanting aroma, attracting night-flying moths. These little pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem, making our Catalpa trees not just beautiful, but essential too.

🐦 Nature's Intriguing Drama at Hemlock Square🐦

A few weeks ago, while tending to the grounds, Hunter discovered a wood thrush nest hidden in an azalea, complete with three beautiful sky-blue eggs.

However, another visitor had found it first: a cowbird laid a single speckled egg among the thrush's treasures. This fascinating behavior, known as brood parasitism, means the cowbird never raises its own young, leaving that task to unsuspecting hosts.

While we always have something of interest in bloom, post peak azalea season much of the garden feels like a lush green forest with pops of color to provide interest throughout.

The team decided that the moon garden could be enhanced by some color so we added monarda, salvia, coreopsis, amsonia and more to keep this garden beautiful and attractive to pollinators all season long.

🌸Blooming Marvel: Meet Cadis!🌸

Get ready to be amazed by Cadis (Caroline X R. discolor) a true gem of our garden! This stunning Gable hybrid has been thriving for nearly 100 yearsand it’s still one of the biggest and most beautiful blooms on the property!

Quick Facts:
- Height: Sturdy upright grower reaching 6-8 feet in just 10 years! Our largest Cadis is around 25ft

-Blooms: prepare for a spectacular show of candy pink flowers in June ( now)

-Light: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Unlike many rhododendrons, it is quite sun-tolerant.

🌸10 AM to 12 PM🌸due to the afternoon forecast.
