📚 Literacy is violence prevention.

Yesterday, DCWS was proud to support Together We Create 4 Kids at North Division High School, investing in something that has the power to change the trajectory of a young person’s life.

Literacy is about more than reading. It builds confidence, strengthens communication, expands opportunity, and gives young people more tools to navigate challenges and imagine what is possible for their future.

North Division is right near one of our, This Is Our City neighborhood clusters, making opportunities like this even more important. Violence prevention starts long before a crisis. It starts by creating environments where young people feel supported, connected, empowered, and equipped to succeed.

Every book opened can open a door. Every young person we invest in strengthens the future of our city. ❤️

This is our city, and prevention starts with investing in our youth. 📚✨

You already have something to bring.
A program. A resource. A skill. A connection. A service. Whatever you're already doing, there's a neighborhood that needs it right now.
The Countdown runs through December 31, but the network we're building isn't stopping there. This is ongoing. Once you're in, you're in.
Want to start where the need is most immediate? Come walk with us. Next three cluster walks:
Monday, 9/28 — 23rd & Locust
Monday, 10/5 — 24th & Walnut
Monday, 10/12 — 2nd & Burleigh
Bring what you've got. We'll bring you to where it's needed.

Monday, This is Our City: The Countdown showed up at 11th & Atkinson, and we got to work. 💪🏾

We walked the neighborhood, cleaned up, connected with residents, youth, and local businesses, provided resources, distributed safety devices, and identified abandoned properties and other concerns impacting the community.

And we didn’t do it alone. The Department of Public Works, Milwaukee Health Department, Milwaukee County, Department of Workforce Development, and Department of Neighborhood Services joined us, bringing the strength and resources of our partners directly into the community.

The best part? Neighbors joined us. They came outside, walked with us, cleaned with us, and became part of the work.

This is what This is Our City: The Countdown looks like on the ground.

People. Partners. Neighbors. One city. Doing the work together.

Every other Monday through the end of the year, we’re taking this effort to another area of Milwaukee.

📍 NEXT STOP: 23rd & Locust
📅 Monday, September 28
⏰ 4:30 PM

Come walk with us. Come work with us. Be part of the movement.

This is Our City. The Countdown is on. ❤️

1 in 5 adults in our city reports frequent mental distress.
That means mental health is not somewhere else. It's in our families, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, and our everyday lives.
The Countdown is about bringing resources closer to the people who need them.
Bring resources. Bring support. Bring what you do.

Milwaukee filled a room with survivors, their people, and everybody who showed up to say healing deserves to be celebrated.
Thank you to every survivor who walked in and let this city see them. Thank you to every person who came to stand with them.

This is what community looks like when it decides survivorship is something to honor, not hide.

Today, DCWS joined MPD District 3, Collective Montessori, community partners, and residents at Butterfly Park, located within one of the clusters identified through This Is Our City: The Countdown, our end-of-year gun violence reduction strategy.

We used today’s gathering as an opportunity to connect directly with residents, share resources, and hear firsthand about the concerns, needs, and strengths within the neighborhood.

This work is about more than responding to violence. It’s about showing up, listening, connecting resources, and following through.

Thank you to our partners and residents for continuing to show up for the community!

Today we remember the lives lost on September 11th, and everyone who was changed by that day.
The families who lost someone. The first responders who ran toward danger. The communities that are still carrying it, twenty-five years later.
We're holding space for all of it today.
