UM Experiential Learning and Career Success

UM Experiential Learning and Career Success Here to prepare you for life after college by setting you up with tools & experience while you’re here.

The University of Montana (UM) sits in the heart of Missoula, Montana, a city well-known for having high levels of social capital and civic engagement opportunities. UM is an integral part of the community on many fronts, and we are proud of the long-standing tradition of student and faculty civic engagement in partnership with local nonprofit organizations, city government, and private businesses

to address issues of public concern at the local level and beyond. Many colleges and universities across the country recognize that higher education institutions must make democracy and civic responsibility a central aspect of higher learning (AAC&U). This value is documented in mission statements and strategic plans. In part, The University of Montana’s mission is to “educate competent and humane professionals and informed, ethical, and engaged citizens of local and global communities; and provide basic and applied research, technology transfer, cultural outreach, and service benefiting the local community, region, State, nation and the world”. In support of this mission, and to galvanize skills for effective community engagement, the Office for Civic Engagement offers various programs to build civic competencies among students.

When alumnus Jackson Groff (’22) lost his football roster spot due to pandemic downsizing, it felt like a massive setback. But looking back, it was the spark that forced him to jumpstart his sports media career early.

Instead of waiting for a formal internship or a job posting, Jackson took a "Learn by Doing" approach right here at UM:

🎙️ The Hustle: He launched his own independent podcast, The Groff Show, interviewing Griz teammates and coaches.

⚽ The Range: He stepped outside his comfort zone to do live play-by-play broadcasting for UM soccer and softball.

📱 The Strategy: He mastered early-stage sports TikTok and YouTube, creating consistent content that bypassed traditional resumes.

The payoff? His self-built portfolio landed him a role at Fox Sports 910 in Phoenix, which eventually led to his dream job. Today, at 26, Jackson is an Associate Producer and weekly college football analyst for the 3 & Out podcast with John Middlekauff at The Volume!

From Missoula to covering Super Bowl Radio Row and the NFL Combine, Jackson’s biggest advice to students is simple: "Start before you think you're ready."

Growing up in Frenchtown, Montana, alumna Abby Sherwood (’24) saw firsthand the destructive impact of wildfires—from watching the Black Cat Fire sweep near her neighbors' homes to having her college track practices forced indoors by heavy smoke.

But, instead of just dealing with the smoke, Abby used her Environmental Science major to find systemic solutions. She treated Griz Country as a launchpad, stacking federal, scientific, and nonprofit experiences to build an elite path straight into environmental law!

🏛️ Federal Policy in D.C.: Abby interned with the U.S. Dept. of the Interior’s Office of Wildland Fire via the Demmer Scholars Program, writing briefing materials used directly by the Secretary of the Interior!
🔬 Deep-Dive Lab Science: She conducted research on thousands of years of forest recovery in UM’s Paleoecology Fire Ecology Lab to understand the data driving policy.
🌿 NGO Conservation: Abby also traveled to the remote Matador Ranch as a Baucus Climate Scholar with The Nature Conservancy to evaluate carbon tracking in Montana’s grasslands.

The payoff? Abby returned to campus with unstoppable momentum. Today, she is in her second year of Law School at UM while clerking for the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and a Missoula law firm!

So what can you take away from Abby's story? Don’t wait until graduation to see if a career path fits. Tap the link in our bio to read Abby’s full roadmap and book a session with an ELCS Career Coach to take your learning into the field!
