Hultgren, Deputy Alan M.

End of Watch: 08/07/1981
Agency: Skagit County S.O.
County: Skagit County

On Friday, August 7, 1981, Skagit County Deputy Alan Hultgren was struck head-on by a drunk driver and killed on Highway 20, about four miles west of Marblemount.
Deputy Hultgren was responding to an injury collision at the time of the incident.
Deputy Hultgren served the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office for five years. He is survived by his wife and family.

Hanger, Detective Brent L.

End of Watch: 08/06/2015
Agency: Washington State Patrol
County: Snohomish County

Detective Brent Hanger suffered a fatal heart attack while hiking into a remote area of Chinook Pass, near Yakima, to investigate reports of a ma*****na growing operation.
He began to suffer chest pains and shortness of breath. Other detectives who were with him immediately called for assistance and started CPR after he collapsed, but were unable to revive him.
Detective Hanger served with the Washington State Patrol for 17 years. He is survived by his wife and six children.

Hilsinger, Town Marshal John A.

End of Watch: 07/27/1945

County: Skagit County
John Hilsinger was a town marshal and volunteer firefighter for the city of La Conner. He was assisting with a fire at a local shingle mill when he was electrocuted. Marshal Hilsinger had just taken the nozzle and stepped in a pool of water when a wire fell to the ground electrifying the pool of water he was standing in. A pulmeter was used but failed to revive him.
Marshal Hilsinger is survived by his wife, daughter, mother, three brothers and two sisters.

Poor, Deputy George W.

End of Watch: 07/26/1891

County: King County
On Sunday, July 26, 1891, Deputy George Poor of the King County Sheriff’s Office went to Skagit County to assist a federal customs inspector. Customs was investigating the report of illegal Chinese immigrants who had been smuggled into Washington from Canada.
After Deputy Poor and the inspector took the group of immigrants into custody, they es**rted them back into Sedro-Woolley. As they conducted the es**rt, another customs inspector ambushed Deputy Poor and the inspector in a case of mistaken identity.
Deputy Poor died from gunshot wounds.

With rising temperatures, please take a moment to make sure all of your animals have plenty of fresh water and access to shade. Keeping them cool isn’t just important it’s essential for their safety.

We all love bringing our pets along for the ride, but during hot weather it’s best to leave your furry friends at home. Even a few minutes in a hot car can be dangerous, illegal, and potentially deadly. Please don’t take the risk🐶

Looking for fun ways to keep your pets cool? Try setting up a kiddie pool or sprinkler, or take them to a lake, creek, or river. You can also freeze their favorite toys or treats for a refreshing “doggie-pop!”

If you’re hauling livestock, plan your trips for the early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower. Keep trips short and make frequent stops to ensure animals stay properly hydrated🐎🐄

Let’s all do our part to keep our animals safe and comfortable during this heat!

On September 2, 2008, our community experienced an unimaginable loss. We remember Julie Binschus, Greg Gillum, Deputy Anne Jackson, Leroy Lange, David Radcliffe, and Chester Rose six lives taken too soon, but never forgotten.

The Skagit County First Responders Foundation is working to create a memorial that will honor their lives, their stories, and the lasting impact they have on our community. This tribute will serve as a place of remembrance for generations to come.
