History in the Making! Today, we're thrilled to announce a historic moment as management and 8 bargaining units of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Fire & Emergency Services have signed the largest Master Labor Agreement in the Department of Defense's history!

After the successful conclusion of the third week-long negotiation session in Philadelphia, we're excited about an agreement that will positively impact over 600 members of our Fire & Emergency Services team. It's been a marathon week of spirited debate, passionate discussions, compromise, and advocacy, and we're proud to move forward together.

As the temperatures begin to drop and we head towards winter, it's crucial to prioritize safety when using portable space heaters on base. Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of fires in the United States, resulting in property damage, injuries, and deaths each year.

Big thanks to Team Oceana’s Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Fire & Emergency Services District 3 for spreading the word about cooking safety during Fire Prevention Week! This week, they visited our wonderful military kids in our Child Youth Programs to teach them about fire prevention.

: Cooking remains the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries, accounting for 49% of all home fires in the United States. The #1 cause of fires in the kitchen = Unattended Cooking. In Virginia Beach this year, our crews have already responded to approximately 88 fires that started in the kitchen, with an expected increase in the upcoming holiday season.
Please, 🍳👨‍🍳

👀Watch what you heat. Always keep a close eye on what you are cooking. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

🍳Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Always keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.

⚠️Have a “kid- and pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet (1 meter) around the stove or grill and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention!

We are teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) – the official sponsor of Fire Prevention WeekTM (FPW) for over a century – to promote this year's FPW campaign: "Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire preventionTM." The campaign aims to educate everyone about simple but crucial actions they can take when cooking to ensure safety for themselves and those around them.

According to NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States. Unattended cooking stands out as the primary cause of cooking fires and related fatalities.
