District 1 recently hosted a community outreach and recruitment event at Naval Station Norfolk, providing high school juniors and seniors from the Chesapeake Career Center Firefighting Program with Chesapeake Public Schools, along with their principal and instructors, with an immersive look into Navy installation operations and emergency response capabilities.

Throughout the event, students experienced an interactive behind-the-scenes view of the United States Navy Sailors and Fire & Emergency Services personnel who protect those who defend America. The visit highlighted both military and federal civilian career pathways while showcasing the teamwork, professionalism, and operational readiness required across the installation. Through a comprehensive itinerary that included a shipboard tour of the USS Nitze, technical rescue and Marine Firefighter demonstrations at Station 1, Airport Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) operations at Station 3, and a VRM-40 CMV-22 Osprey static display at LP-27, the students gained firsthand exposure to critical Navy ratings and civilian roles—including Damage Controlmen (DC), Aviation Boatswain's Mates (AB), aviation maintenance technicians, aviation pilots, and federal civilian firefighters.

Naval Station Norfolk successfully completed a week-long Final Evaluation Problem (FEP), assessed by evaluators from Commander, Navy Installations Command.

The intensive week evaluated operational readiness, response capabilities, teamwork, and decision-making across the installation. The assessment culminated in a full-scale Integrated Active Shooter Drill, designed to test interagency coordination, communication, and rapid response capabilities under high-stress conditions.

The exercise demonstrated the professionalism, preparedness, and dedication of all participating personnel and partner agencies committed to protecting the installation and its personnel. 🚒🚑🚓
