⚓The Fouled Anchor is the emblem of the rate of Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy. Attached to the anchor is a length of chain and the letters U.S.N. To the novice, the anchor, chain and letters only identify a Chief Petty Officer of the United States Navy, but, to a Chief, these have a more noble and glorious meaning. ⚓

Today, Mariner Skills Training Center Atlantic honored the legacy of Captain Paul X. Rinn, USN (Ret.) — a Navy icon whose leadership and commitment to training left a lasting mark on the Surface Warfare community.

Captain Rinn believed that true readiness isn't built in the moment of crisis, but long before it — through relentless training, strong leadership, and a crew that trusts one another completely. That philosophy defined his career and continues to guide how we train service members here every day.

It is only fitting that Mariner Skills Training Center Atlantic’s conference center Rinn Hall, carries his name forward for every sailor who walks through our doors — a daily reminder of what disciplined leadership and preparation can accomplish.

Today, MSTCLANT paused to remember September 11, 2001 - the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the service members who answered the call in the years that followed.

Twenty-five years later, we carry that memory into everything that we do: training the next generation of men and women to stand the watch, ready to defend this nation and the freedoms so many gave everything to protect.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Nine years ago, on August 21, 2017, USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) collided with the tanker Alnic MC east of the Strait of Malacca. Ten Sailors were lost that morning. We remember them and the families who carry their memory.

Join us in congratulating the newest group of Basic Division Officer Course (BDOC) and Officer of the Deck (OOD) Phase 1 graduates!
NORFOLK, VA. (July 31, 2026) -- RADM Christopher Alexander, Commander, Naval Surface Force Atlantic and special guest speaker, congratulated new BDOC and OOD Phase 1 graduates on completing their initial Surface Warfare Officer training. He welcomed them to the Fleet and offered them words of wisdom to aid them in their careers during a graduation ceremony at Rinn Hall, onboard Naval Station Norfolk.

Give an extra warm round of applause to:

ENS Bonney, Shiphandler Awardee, presented a compass courtesy of First Command - Norfolk, Virginia.
