-Avoid sitting in an idle vehicle, even if the windows are cracked open.
-Always take children and pets with you.

"Imagine waking up in the middle of the night and your house is on fire. You have to leave everything behind-your clothes, your photos, even your favorite things. That thought is really scary to me. This is when the American Red Cross steps in to help.

When disasters like fires, hurricanes, or floods happen, they give families food, clean water, blankets, and a safe place to stay. They also help people find their loved ones if they get separated. I think this is important because in moments like that, people need comfort and hope, not just supplies. No one should have to go through something like that frightening alone."

This is an excerpt from “Hope When Things Go Wrong,” an essay written by Kiera Wiggins, a 6th grader at Narragansett Pier School.

Kiera was recently recognized for her winning essay at the Spirit of Giving Essay Award, hosted by GFWC Women's Club of South County, Inc.. Her piece beautifully captures the mission and impact of the American Red Cross. She further exemplifies the spirit of giving by sharing her work and presenting a donation in her name.
