LCSO Warns Residents to the Increase of Law Enforcement and Government Agency Imposter Calls

The Lackawanna County Sheriff’s Office continues to take reports from residents who have been receiving calls from individuals claiming to be from our office and using the names of our supervisors. Our office phone number has also been “cloned” / “spoofed” by the fraudsters which makes it appear that the calls are coming from our office. The names of other law enforcement entities including federal, state, and county agencies such as the IRS, FBI, ICE, Social Security Administration, and US Marshals Office have also been used by the fraudsters. The individuals perpetrating these scams are known to ask for non-traditional forms of money transfers such as gift cards, bitcoin, moneypak, and overnight mailing of cash. No legitimate financial transaction involving a government or law enforcement entity will ever use these methods of payment.

Citizens who receive calls of this type are advised to follow the below tips:

DO NOT confirm or provide any personal information (Name, Date of Birth, Social Security Number, Drivers Licenses Number etc.)

Hang up immediately

Note the phone number of caller

File an online complaint at www.ftc.gov/complaint
