⛔️Closures on Wakarusa Dr. scheduled for K-10/SLT project

A series of three separate closures on Wakarusa Drive is scheduled to begin next week, as part of the Kansas Department of Transportation’s K-10/South Lawrence Trafficway (SLT) expansion project.

On Wednesday, Aug. 19, Wakarusa Drive will close between Clinton Parkway and the entrance to the convenience store, Miller Mart, for approximately 45 calendar days. Access to Miller Mart and surrounding businesses can be made from the south during the closure.

Following completion of the first closure, Wakarusa Drive will close between Miller Mart’s entrance and Stoneback Drive for approximately 45 calendar days. During this closure, access to Miller Mart can be made from the north. Stoneback Drive can be accessed from the south and Aberdeen Apartments can be accessed from the east entrance at Ranch Street.

Upon completion, Wakarusa Drive will close between Stoneback Drive and 27th Street for up to 90 calendar days. During this closure, Stoneback Drive can be accessed from the north.

No detours will be posted during the closures, and motorists will need to use alternate routes.

All project work and traffic changes are conditions permitting and subject to change.

More information about the SLT project is available at ksdot.gov/SLT.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert, follow posted signs and refrain from hand-held mobile device use in all active work zones. For current road conditions, visit KanDrive.gov or call 511. For updates on highway projects in northeast Kansas, visit ksdot.gov/NortheastNews.

🔶I-70 under California Ave. in Topeka to close for bridge project

On Monday, Aug. 17, the Kansas Department of Transportation will close all lanes of I-70 under the California Avenue bridge in Topeka, as part of the ongoing bridge replacement project.

During the closure, I-70 traffic will be diverted around the closure area by exiting at the respective off-ramp and re-entering I-70 via the on-ramp. The off-ramp stop signs will be covered, allowing traffic to flow through the intersection.

Access to and from California Avenue will not be available during this time. A marked detour will direct traffic to the S.E. Deer Creek/Carnahan Avenue interchange. Westbound I-70 can be accessed from the Adams Street/Branner Trafficway on-ramp.

This traffic configuration is expected to be in place through December while the new California Avenue bridge is constructed.

All project work and traffic changes are conditions permitting and subject to change.

More information about the project is available at ksdot.gov/California-Bridge.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert, follow posted signs and refrain from hand-held mobile device use in all active work zones. For current road conditions, visit KanDrive.gov or call 511. For updates on highway projects in northeast Kansas, visit ksdot.gov/NortheastNews.

🔔Back-To-School Reminder🔔
🛑STOP means STOP!🛑Kansas Law requires drivers to stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights and stop arm. Obey the law and help keep our students safe!

08/06/2026

Governor Laura Kelly signed a proclamation designating August 2 through 8, 2026, as Kansas School Bus Stop Arm Week.

As students head back to school this month, be sure to watch for school buses and slowdown in school zones. Remember, in Kansas when a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, drivers on the roadways must stop.

Let's work together to protect students, school bus drivers, and the traveling public on Kansas roadways by remembering to Just Stop.

🔶Signing project in Marshall Co. to begin next week

KDOT plans to begin a signing project the week of Monday, Aug. 3. The project will replace highway signs along sections of K-9, K-99, K-233, U.S. 36 and U.S. 77 in Marshall County.

Project work will primarily be done on the roadway’s shoulders with minimal impact to traffic; however, flaggers may be used to direct traffic if a temporary lane closure is necessary. Advanced signing will be in place to alert drivers of the active work area.

Work will take place Monday through Saturday during daylight hours and is expected to be complete by October, conditions permitting.

KOMO Construction, of Elko New Market, Minnesota, is the $726,000 project’s prime contractor.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert, follow posted signs and refrain from hand-held mobile device use in all active work zones. For current road conditions, visit KanDrive.gov or call 511. For updates on highway projects in northeast Kansas, visit ksdot.gov/NortheastNews.
