Capital Roots (formerly Capital District Community Gardens) is a non-profit organization that works to reduce the impact of poor nutrition on public health in New York's Capital Region. We organize community gardens, improve access to healthy food, offer nutrition and horticulture education for all ages and coordinate urban greening programs in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady and southern Saratoga counties.

A big thank you to our friends at Hawthorne Valley Farm for supporting our Squash Hunger program with a generous donation this week!

Their donation included:
• 162 half gallons of milk
• More than 900 32 oz. containers of organic yogurt

These nutritious staples will help support individuals and families across the Capital Region through our network of food pantries, shelters, and community organizations. Partnerships like this help Squash Hunger connect fresh, healthy food with neighbors throughout our communities.

This week, Eagle Scout candidate Leo Sutphin of BSA Troop 4045 completed his leadership project with the installation of a new hand-built garden shed and four newly constructed raised garden beds.

With support from scouts, leaders, families, and Capital Roots staff, the final phase of work brings lasting improvements that will strengthen the garden’s ability to serve local families growing fresh, healthy food.

Huge thank you to our friends for their incredible support at our Urban Grow Center and Vanderheyden Community Garden!

Their team rolled up their sleeves to help build and install new raised garden beds, construct a shed that will serve our planting education space, and assist with beautification efforts that will make our community more welcoming and functional for everyone who uses it.

The hard work and care they brought to the project will have a lasting impact for years to come, helping create a stronger, more vibrant place for learning, growing, and connecting.

Thank you to the vendors, volunteers, staff, musicians, and community members who helped make the first Good Food Fest a success!

On a beautiful evening at Capital Roots Urban Grow Center, neighbors gathered to enjoy local food from our Incubator Kitchen members, craft beverages, and live music from DJ HollyW8D and Whiskey West, with special thanks to The Dishing and Whiskey Pickle for their support in making the event possible.

Together, we celebrated the farmers, food makers, and small businesses that strengthen our local food system and build a healthier, more connected Capital Region.

Congratulations to Morning Pine Acres for winning the inaugural Best in Brine pickle tasting contest, and to Kashuba’s Pickling Co. for earning the People’s Choice Award!
