Capital Roots

Capital Roots Grow, Educate, Provide.

Capital Roots (formerly Capital District Community Gardens) is a non-profit organization that works to reduce the impact of poor nutrition on public health in New York's Capital Region. We organize community gardens, improve access to healthy food, offer nutrition and horticulture education for all ages and coordinate urban greening programs in Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady and southern Saratoga counties.

Yesterday, our Healthy Communities team led the reinstallation of Washington Park’s quick-build traffic calming project, helping make one of Albany’s most beloved public spaces safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, and everyone who enjoys the park.

This effort would not have been possible without the incredible support of our Urban Forestry and Community Gardens teams, dedicated volunteers, and community partners from CEO and Hallam-ICS. We also extend our sincere thanks to the City of Albany and Albany DGS for their collaboration and assistance throughout the project.

Originally launched through the NYS Department of Health’s Creating Healthy Schools and Communities initiative, this project continues to demonstrate what can happen when community organizations, local government, and volunteers come together around a shared vision for safer, healthier neighborhoods.

Thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves and helped bring this important work back to life in Washington Park.

There’s something about spring at Capital Roots. You feel it before you see it—seedlings breaking through Gardens, fresh local food returning to neighborhoods, and urban spaces turning green again.

This is the season when everything we’ve been building all year begins to bloom.
And it doesn’t happen on its own.

With a monthly gift of $15, you help plant gardens, bring fresh food to families, and strengthen neighborhoods across our region. You are the water, soil, and sun that keeps the work growing all year long.

Yesterday, we celebrated a transformational investment from KeyBank Foundation to help expand Capital Roots’ Cut Local Produce Program across the Capital Region.

This support will help more schools, seniors, families, and organizations access fresh, local food while creating new opportunities for regional farms and producers.

Thank you to KeyBank for investing in healthier communities, stronger local food systems, and a future where everyone has access to nutritious food.

A car full of fresh local food and a team of dedicated staff and volunteers can change lives.

Through our Squash Hunger program, we get fresh, top-quality local food into the hands of local partners, from food pantries and libraries to emergency feeding centers, helping ensure families across the Capital Region have what they need.

Each week takes thousands of pounds of sorting, bagging, and distribution work, but seeing that food reach organizations like Serenity Solidarity and Schenectady Street Soldiers makes every step worth it.

🌳🍎 Fresh for our 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝟵𝗮𝗺, we have some beautiful Liberty and Cortland apple trees, a perfect addition to any backyard orchard!

Liberty apples are a low-maintenance, disease-resistant variety known for their crisp, sweet-tart flavor and excellent performance in organic gardens. Cortland apples are famous for their crisp white flesh that resists browning after slicing, making them ideal for salads, baking, cider, and fresh eating.

Both varieties are cold-hardy, productive, and perfectly suited for the Capital Region.

These trees are available at a fantastic price for $200 each or two for $300, with affordable transport and installation available from our Urban Greening Services Team. Arrive early because these will sell quick!
