County of Maui Department of Water Supply (DWS) work is under way to strengthen Lahaina’s water infrastructure.
 
The Lahaina Waterline Improvement Project will replace aging waterlines and improve the reliability of the community’s water system, supporting more dependable water service for Lahaina.
 
A blessing event was held late last month at the Lahaina project site with County officials, contractor Goodfellow Bros. Inc., other project partners and Lahaina Advisory Team members.
 
“This project is an investment in Lahaina’s long-term resilience. A stronger, more reliable water system means greater capacity to support rebuilding, better preparedness for future emergencies and infrastructure designed to serve the community for generations,” Mayor Richard Bissen said. “Before project groundbreaking, there are months of planning, coordination and commitment by dedicated public servants, engineers and construction professionals. The Lahaina Waterline Improvement Project represents another important step in moving Lahaina’s recovery from response to long-term readiness.”
 
Over the next two years, approximately 20,000 feet — nearly four miles — of waterline will be replaced, including upsizing sections of the system to improve water flow and capacity.
 
The project will also add new fire hydrants, refurbish existing hydrants and standpipes, and improve the reliability and performance of the system to better serve the Lahaina service area.

The County of Maui Department of Human Concerns Immigrant Services Division will host a United States Passport Application Acceptance Fair by appointment from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, at the Maui Family YMCA Westside Resource Center, 226 Kupuohi St., Lahaina.

The outreach event is designed to make passport services more accessible to West Maui residents by bringing passport acceptance services directly to the community.

Appointments are available between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. To schedule an appointment and receive information about required documents, fees and application requirements, call the County Immigrant Services Division at (808) 270-7791.

The County Immigrant Services Division office at One Main Plaza, 2200 Main St., Suite 547, Wailuku, will be closed all day Aug. 28 for the event. The division’s Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi offices will remain open during their normal business hours.

Such a special day welcoming the Ducheneau ʻohana home.

The Lahaina ʻohana recently purchased their new home in Kihei with the support of the County of Maui’s Hoʻokumu Hou First-Time Homebuyer Opportunity Program. Habitat for Humanity also helped make their home ADA accessible through its A Brush with Kindness program.

Mayor Richard Bissen and representatives from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) joined the ʻohana for the blessing.

The First-Time Homebuyer Opportunity Program, which provides up to $600,000 in assistance to eligible wildfire-impacted residents toward the purchase of a new home in Maui Nui, is funded by the CDBG-DR grant allocated by HUD to the County of Maui.

While applications for this program are closed, Ho‘okumu Hou is still accepting applications for its Single-Family Homeowner Reconstruction and Reimbursement programs. These programs provide assistance to eligible homeowners who lost their home in the 2023 Maui wildfires. For more information, visit hookumuhou.mauicounty.gov.
