I would like to thank my colleagues for joining me last night in a moment of silence to honor the men who lost their lives at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging mill.

Last night, I voted to end the disastrous war in Iran.

When I talk to members of my community, what I hear is that they need gas prices to come down, they need to afford to put food on the table. They don’t need us to continue a multi-billion dollar war that drives up costs and wastes taxpayer money.

I’ve always said my role as a member of Congress is to ensure that prolonged military action is durable and strategic. This war is neither, and it’s time for it to end.

My amendment to fully fund the Chemical Safety Board was just adopted in committee!

This independent watchdog agency is going to be an important partner in getting answers for the families, loved ones, and community about the catastrophe in Longview.

I sincerely thank my bipartisan colleagues for bucking attempts to eliminate this watchdog agency, and standing for transparency as our community looks for answers.

This week continues to be one of the most difficult weeks our community has ever faced. As we mourn the devastating loss of life, I know there is also so much fear and uncertainty about the future. I am working to make sure mill workers get paid and the loved ones of the men who died get the immediate support they need. I’m also committed to making sure there is a complete independent investigation, so that our community can get answers about what took place.

My Kelso office is open and we are here to help during this difficult time. If you’re having trouble getting an answer from a government agency or need help accessing resources like:

Social Security benefits for children of victims

IRS questions on taxation of donations

Student loan discharge for victims

Or any other issue; we are here to help track down answers.

My Kelso office is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, or by appointment, at 308 S Pacific Ave, Suite B. Please come by in person or give our office a call at 360-695-6292.

Yesterday, I sent a letter to executives at Nippon Dynawave Packaging asking them to clarify their commitment to pay workers during the investigation.

These are our friends, our neighbors, our families, and we need to make sure they’re being taken care of. Read the letter below.

The horrifying loss of life in Longview last week demands a thorough impartial investigation conducted by the independent watchdog Chemical Safety Board.

Unfortunately the presidents proposed budget has zeroed out the CSB budget.

Next week, I’ll be making it my priority to ensure the agency is funded and, in the longer term, work to ensure the board includes the trades experience necessary for a full picture of the complex interaction between lab experience and trades experience.

If you’re not from a trades family or a mill community, it can be hard to understand how devastating this sort of industrial catastrophe is for a mill town like Longview.

It’s the lives, land and livelihoods of millworkers at risk here, and I’m here to make sure their voices are guiding the investigation into what needs to be done to rebuild safe and secure jobs, where workers come home to their families at the end of the day.

My gratitude goes to the Longview Fire Department and all the first responders who arrived at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging Company this morning to respond to the explosion.

My heart goes out to the families of those killed and injured by this terrible blast. These families will need our help and support in the months and years ahead. If you pray, now is a good time to send up some prayers for the millworkers in Longview and their families.

The community of Ryderwood loses power at least once a winter and it’s dangerous for members of this 55+ community to go without electricity for an extended period of time.

I am excited that I was able to secure funding for Cowlitz PUD to underground power lines to improve reliability and save money for ratepayers.

Thank you Senator Maria Cantwell for your help with this project.

It’s easy to forget painful things, to make them small or frivolous - but in choosing to come together and remember the sacrifice of fallen soldiers and their families we shore up what makes our country strong.
Thanks to everyone who came out and most of all thanks to our fallen and their loved ones.
