Across Texas and the nation, the novel coronavirus is deadlier for people of color

The Trump administration and state of Texas failed us.

In the 15th District of Texas, we are a majority Latino. Latinos in South Texas are dying at a rate of 2.5x the rate of the rest of Texas and 47% of deaths statewide were Latino.

It’s not enough to swoop-in last minute to save the day. They had an opportunity to be more proactive and save lives. This failed administration and Texas chose not to.

New data on Texas coronavirus fatalities reveals stark racial disparities.

Power outages are common during disasters, and they can last for several days. Portable generators made for household use can provide temporary power to a few appliances or lights. Be sure to use your generator correctly. Using a generator incorrectly can lead to dangerous situations.

July 13, 2020 To someone who gives a damn. Come on, another round of Stimulus Payment ‘s going out. How about giving me my first check. Are you going to pay the dead again? I am Social Security Benefits and have not received my stimulus payment. It is really upsetting when I go to the IRS website and enter my SSC #. They tell me they do not have enough information of are working on it. What a bunch of crap, just tell me where my payment is or what the problem is with my payment. You tell me I do not have to take any steps, but still no payment. Why can you not just do with a social security number? You have paid millions of dollars to dead people, but not to me. The IRS is worthless So far you are all worthless.

Raising awareness about Hispanics who served and fought in the American Revolution! Hispanics are never mentioned or properly recognized for their brave participation in the Revolutionary War! We are NOT mentioned in movies! We are NOT mentioned in documentaries concerning the Revolutionary War! We are NOT mentioned or taught about in our American schools and colleges about the Hispanic involvement in the American Revolution! The Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia omits the Hispanic contribution, though they claim a small mention of Spain. NOT GOOD ENOUGH! It is time for Hispanics to have their very own historical museum of the American Revolution! As with anything and everything, there has to be a beginning. Why not start here with this group? Thank you! Congressman please advocate for our schools! Coronavirus or not, Texas students must take STAAR! This decision isn't one that is best for the students and staff of Seguin ISD. I'm amazed that a firm decision has been made on STAAR testing when there is yet to be clarity on the reopening of school in the fall. What I do know is many students will return to us having experienced trauma, a significant loss of learning, and facing the possibility of continuing to learn remotely with limited connectivity should schools close again. What I also know is teachers will spend many extra hours monitoring attendance by using convoluted engagement formulas should students learn remotely, they will dedicate numerous hours after school and on weekends with students to compensate for learning loss, and many will experience extreme anxiety worrying about the well-being of their students. The State seeks to further penalize schools by mandating STAAR and labeling schools with letter grades that already negatively impact schools that serve high percentages of students from poverty. Households that were already impoverished are being hit even harder as a result of COVID-19. Why can’t we redirect the millions we spend on STAAR to provide students with technology devices and connectivity to decrease the disparities that exist within our society? Another troubling sign for districts is how federal COVID-19 relief money for Texas school districts has been handled. Texas public schools won’t be receiving all the aid they were expecting from the CARES Act ~ about 1.4 million dollars for Seguin ISD. Instead, the Texas Education Agency has decided to use that money to back-fill gaps in the state budget. At a time when school districts need additional funding to provide technology, connectivity, PPE, and other safety equipment to ensure optimal safety and learning, it is left up to individual districts to find the dollars to prepare for the upcoming school year. Thankfully, Seguin ISD has a healthy fund balance; however, it can only go so far. How can you help? Write to your state leaders! State Rep, John Kuempel at [email protected] TX Sen, Judith Zaffirini at [email protected] TX Sen, Donna Campbell at [email protected] Texas Governor, Gregg Abbott at [email protected] Matthew Gutíerrez
