Capitol Police officer dies from injuries suffered during riots

Officer Sicknick gave his life to protect those of us during the insurrection and siege of the Capitol. While his actions were valiant and heroic, this never should have happened. These domestic terrorists, directly incited by the President, have the death of an innocent and brave officer on their hands. I hope that the Justice Department will act swiftly on this case and bring closure to Officer Sicknick’s family. Lorena and I extend our sincerest condolences to Officer Sicknick’s family and friends on their tragic loss.

The officer is the fifth person to die as a result of the breach Wednesday.

As I witnessed the events of today unfold, my first thought as the doors to the House chamber were breached was about my wife Lorena. Would I return home safely? Is this how far our country has spiraled? Did we experience the past four years and a pandemic for it to end in violence?

Today was unprecedented in United States history. We experienced a siege and an insurrection by domestic terrorists on the Capitol that were fomented by a sitting President of the United States. I am shaken to my core, but I am undeterred.

As we reconvene this evening, I will reaffirm my commitment to a peaceful transfer of power and the sovereignty of our nation. I will uphold my constitutional duty and certify Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the next President and Vice President.

I was in the House Chambers when they came in and told us the Capitol had been breached. They took the Speaker out of the chambers and locked us down and told us to stay in place. Later there were popping noises where we had to get down and follow Capitol Police orders out. As we were leaving, in an act of domestic terrorism, the doors to the chamber itself were breached. I am safe and the Capitol has been secured. I will return to the chamber to fulfill our constitutional duty when called upon. Image below from the Associated Press.

01/06/2021

I condemn any effort meant to overthrow a legitimate election including the violence occurring outside the Capitol. My staff and I are safe and we thank the Capitol Police for their efforts to protect us. Now is the time we must come together as a nation and move forward.

I am deeply saddened that I will not have the opportunity to serve with Congressman-elect Letlow. Lorena and I send the Letlow family our sincerest condolences. This tragic loss is a reminder that this virus is dangerous and we must work together to overcome it.

House Rejects Trump's Defense Bill Veto In Highly Unusual Vote

Last night, I voted to override the President’s veto of the NDAA. By vetoing the NDAA, the President vetoed a pay raise for our troops, vetoed our troops’ ability to benefit from the new hazardous duty pay provisions, vetoed enhanced sexual assault prevention and response programs, and vetoed benefits for our Vietnam-era veterans, among other important provisions. I was proud to override this veto for our service members and to protect our national security.

Members of Congress voted to override President Trump's veto of the National Defense Authorization Act, which had passed overwhelmingly in both parties. The Senate's next moves are unclear.

House to vote on increasing coronavirus stimulus checks to $2,000

I will vote in favor of providing further relief for the American people. A $600 check is not enough and I'm glad to see that the CASH Act is creating bipartisanship in the House. Contact your Senators and Representatives and urge them to vote in favor of this legislation.

The Democratic-controlled House is expected to pass the bill, but it faces an uphill battle in the GOP-run Senate despite Trump's support.

Congressman Gonzalez Helps Secure Critical Funds in Coronavirus Relief Bill

Our most important job as members of Congress is to make sure that we take care of the American people. $600 is not enough and this new law lacks funding for state and local governments which will impact how we pay salaries for our law enforcement officers, teachers and frontline workers.

While far from perfect, this bipartisan agreement does give working families and small businesses a small lifeline. I also helped to secure $69 billion in critically needed funding for COVID-19 testing, contact tracing, vaccines, mental health, and support for health care providers, $7 billion to increase access to broadband and added a $300 per week UI enhancement for Americans out of work.

We owe it to our frontline workers and all of those impacted by the coronavirus to get this right. I look forward to working with the incoming Biden-Harris administration to deliver more relief to the American people.

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) fought for funds to support vaccine distribution, maintain unemployment insurance, expand broadband access, and assist education institutions in C...

$900B COVID relief bill passed by Congress, sent to Trump

This bipartisan compromise emergency relief bill is an important initial step that allows us to continue supporting Americans and businesses that are suffering. However, I am extremely disappointed that this agreement does not provide for hazard pay for our frontline workers, additional funding for state and local governments and larger stimulus payments for constituents whose bills are piling up. Nevertheless, I will not stop fighting for the 15th District of Texas and advocate for policies that protect the health and safety of Americans.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress passed a $900 billion pandemic relief package that would finally deliver long-sought cash to businesses and individuals and resources to vaccinate a nation confronting a...

Surrounded by death and division, Valley medical workers emerge triumphant - The Monitor

Thank you to all of our health care and frontline workers. We’ve leaned on you throughout this pandemic and you’ve given your sweat, tears and, in some cases, lives for our community. We owe you a huge debt of gratitude. You are our heroes and 2020 Citizens of the Year.

Time faded inside Fermin Herrera’s hospital room at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. Inauguration committee urges people not to travel for Biden's inauguration

Public health and safety are the top priorities for President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris which is why this inauguration will be limited and primarily virtual. I am encouraging constituents not to travel to Washington for the ceremonies as there will be no public ticketing for the event. This inauguration will be a new and innovative event that will showcase the strength and diversity of our nation virtually and all Americans can participate from the safety of their homes.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee on Tuesday urged Americans to refrain from traveling for President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris' inauguration on January 20 amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

After Grim Deaths In The Borderlands, An Effort To Find Out Who Migrants Were

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed my bill, the Missing Persons and Unidentified Remains Act, which provides federal dollars for local law enforcement to recover and identify the remains of migrants who perished on their journey north. Identifying remains and recovering them drains towns along the border of resources that could otherwise be used to help free up local resources for rural health care, education, broadband, and other key services. I'm proud to have passed this bill in a bipartisan, bicameral way and will work to see it signed by the President.

More than 200 migrants die attempting to cross the Southwest border each year. Slowly, scientists at a Texas laboratory are seeking the story of their bones.

Congressman Gonzalez Calls on Congressional Leadership to Include Stimulus Payments in COVID-19 Relief Package

As COVID-19 relief continues to be debated, I will keep pushing for stimulus payments. Millions of Americans are without a job, others are struggling to pay their bills, put food on the table or buy prescription drugs. We owe it to them to come together and pass another round of Economic Impact Payments.

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) sent a letter to House and Senate leadership urging them to include stimulus payments in the next COVID-19 aid package. As it stands, Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has signaled that he is not in favor of this proposal.

US allows emergency COVID-19 vaccine in bid to end pandemic - The Monitor

The FDA’s emergency authorization of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is a historical and momentous day for science, this nation and the world. While this is good news, we have not yet turned the page on this virus and have much work ahead.

Our mission now must be to urge our neighbors and loved ones to get vaccinated by offering facts surrounding the safety and efficacy of this vaccine. It’s on public officials like myself and others to encourage the public to continue practice social distancing measures as we work to inoculate the American people.

In the meantime, the federal government and incoming Biden administration must develop a plan to prioritize those who are most at risk, our frontline workers and heavily impacted regions of the country to receive this vaccine. I will continue to advocate for South Texas which is one of the worst impacted areas in the country. Though the Rio Grande Valley comprises just 4.75 percent of the state population, our region accounts for approximately 15 percent of the deaths in Texas.

I am eternally grateful for the work of the scientists, frontline workers, and others who face this virus head on every day. Hope is the greatest gift we could receive this holiday season.

By LAURAN NEERGAARD, MATTHEW PERRONE and JONATHAN LEMIRE | Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. gave the final go-ahead Friday to the nation’s first COVID-19 vaccine, marking what could be the beginning of the end of an outbreak that has killed nearly 300,000 Americans. Open Letter to U.S. Congress Why You Are In Congress Why do people from all around the world wish to come to America? Is it to go to Disneyland? Is it to go to Hollywood? Is it to view the vast beautiful natural wonders of its parks, its rivers, its rustic towns and beautiful scenery from West to East and South to North? The reason people come to America can be found in one word - Freedom! You are in Congress to help insure that we continue to enjoy that freedom for which so many gallant men and women have sacrificed their bodies and lives. What guarantees that freedom? The Bill of Rights and our Constitution are the foundations of that freedom to which we so dearly cling. Without elections free from fraud, we lose our freedom. We lose America. Many states, especially the Swing States of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin,Arizona and Nevada changed their election laws in an unconstitutional manner by not having those changes being enacted by their legislatures per the U.S. Constitution in the months and weeks leading up to the November 3rd Election this year. The changes made in those states encouraged fraudulent voting and that fraud was seen in numerous cases changing the outcome of the Presidential Election. The Supreme Court refused to look at the evidence and try the case. It is their job to enforce the Constitution of the United States of America. They failed to do so and in that failing therein lies the beginning of the end of freedom in America. You can correct their error on January 6th by throwing out ALL the illegal votes cast in the swing states even though that means throwing out many votes that were legal. That is the only way to correct the outcome. If this 2020 election stands, the reason you are in Congress and the reason people from all over the world wish to come to America is gone. Choose freedom!
Looks like pelosi's family is getting million$, gender studies getting million$, Sudan getting million$, Smithsonian (pelosi fam works there) million$, and numerous other Shams getting million$,. But WE THE PEOPLE are waiting for $600 measly bucks??? Congressmen kept getting their paychecks and did little to no work for it, while businesses and jobs shut down. Where is the designated drop off for mail in ballots in McAllen? Thanks!
Congressman, I support you and Our Democrats but I have a concern. For the economies sake we should meet in the middle with the Republicans on the stimulus package and help create jobs and keep our major and small business afloat. I am one of the lucky ones that could care less about $1200.00 for me but our Airlines are suffering, a lot of small business have closed and we need to work something out. What happened to Parties working together for the betterment of our country and our tax payers. I would appreciate the help on this matter.

Representative Gonzalez, There is a paper I have read about state bailouts that is very concerning to me, Why State Bailouts Shouldn't Happen, by Matthew D. Dickerson and Alison Winters; from Americans For Prosperity. Some states do not need or even want more bailouts, some want them because of their mismanagement of their own budgets. If you are not familiar with this paper please download a copy and read it. The Federal budget is already out of hand and adding to it at this level will be catastrophic for us as a nation. Thank you, Bob Headrick San Benito, Texas 78586
