As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, I was in Ukraine last week to evaluate the ongoing impact of Russia’s aggression and affirm our support for the freedom-loving people of Ukraine.

My high was visiting Hansen Village, a community outside of Kyiv built by a Utahn for Ukrainians whose homes have been destroyed. There we met families who survived Russian occupation and imprisonment. Their stories were inspiring.

It is, in so many ways, in America's interest to continue supporting Ukraine. I'm leaving this visit with a fresh view on how the U.S. can help this country continue to defend its sovereignty.

Today, on the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on 9/11, we remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost, honor the first responders who ran toward danger, and give thanks to those who answered the call to defend our country in the years that followed. May we also never forget the unity and courage Americans showed in the face of tragedy.

Freedom of expression and open debate, enshrined by our Founders in the First Amendment, are core values of the American experiment. Charlie Kirk exercised that right with vigor and passion. His murder not only resulted in the loss of a conservative voice respected by so many, but was an attack on all voices. May we commit ourselves to debate respectfully, reject extremism, and most importantly denounce political violence. Sue and I continue to pray for the Kirk family and Charlie’s loved ones.
