Some members of our team recently had the opportunity to tour the LRS Material Recycling Facility in Northbrook. This facility processes more than 15 tons of material each hour. Recyclables collected from our homes are brought here, where they are sorted and prepared for reuse, helping reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.

As part of the Rebuild Waukegan initiative, the City is continuing efforts to beautify public spaces throughout the community. From the planter beds at City Hall to downtown planters and City entrance signs, these areas are being filled with colorful flowers to help make Waukegan look its best this season.

Our Public Works team, in partnership with IR Pro Lawn Works INC, will be ensuring these planted areas are maintained all season long by keeping them watered, clean, and free of weeds and litter so they continue looking beautiful throughout the summer.

Thank you to our Public Works staff and IR Pro Lawn Works INC for the hard work and attention to detail that helps us not only Rebuild Waukegan, but maintain it with pride.

Construction on Lewis Avenue between Glen Flora Avenue and Grand Avenue is nearing completion!

This stretch of road was heavily impacted by cracks, potholes, and aging infrastructure. Through this project, our teams were able to:
• Replace 100% of curbs and sidewalks
• Replace 58 lead service lines with 100% neighbor participation for safer, cleaner water service
• Fully repave this section of Lewis Avenue

Projects like this set the foundation for the future of Waukegan’s road program. By rebuilding infrastructure from the ground up, we can reduce the need to repeatedly disturb newly reconstructed areas and help keep our streets in their best condition for years to come.

Hydrant flushing is underway in Waukegan’s 4th Ward! 1st Ward Hydrant Flushing has concluded.

This video gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how the process works.

Flushing hydrants is an essential part of maintaining our water system. Each hydrant is typically flushed for about 5 minutes to:
• Clear out sediment from water mains
• Improve overall water quality
• Ensure hydrants are functioning properly for emergency response

During this process, residents may notice:
• Temporary drops in water pressure
• Slight discoloration in water

If this happens, run cold water for a few minutes until it clears.

Our Waukegan Water Utility crews will continue working through the city over the coming weeks as part of this important maintenance effort. Thank you for your patience as we keep Waukegan’s water system safe and reliable.

- The City of Waukegan has launched a new and improved online Waukegan Public Works portal, making it easier for residents to report issues like potholes, graffiti, fallen trees, water leaks, illegal dumping, and more.

“This tool puts accessibility front and center, allowing the community to quickly report issues and submit service requests from wherever they are,” said Mayor Sam Cunningham.

The new system allows users to submit requests 24/7, upload photos, pin exact locations, and receive updates throughout the process. Public Works Supervisor Alonzo Jenkins said, “We have made the process very easy with this new digital system.”
