Far West Local Health District The Far West LHD serves a population of about 29,184 people across an area covering 194,949 square km The Far West LHD is one of the smallest LHD’s in NSW.

The Far West Local Health District (LHD) is a NSW Government organisation and has a vision “Excellence in Rural and Remote Health” and its mission is “Enabling health in our communities”. The Far West LHD consists of eight public health facilities:

o Broken Hill Health Service
o Balranald Multipurpose Service
o Wilcannia Multipurpose Service
o Wentworth Health Service
o Ivanhoe Health Service
o Menindee Health Service
o Tibooburra Health Service
o White Cliffs Health Service. The Far West LHD also includes the Family and Child Health Centre (Broken Hill) and Dareton Primary Care & Community Health Service, together with a number of other facilities including mental health and aged care facilities. It serves a dispersed population of approximately 30,009 people and covers one of the largest geographical areas (194,949 square kilometres). It has a population with the highest proportion of Aboriginal people in the State.

Community information

FWLHD has noted an increase in acute respiratory infections (influenza A). Due to this, Broken Hill Health Service will be moving to a Yellow Alert status effective today, 30 September 2026.

All staff, patients and visitors are required to wear a surgical mask in all clinical and patient-facing areas of the hospital while the alert is in place.

Masks are available at all entries to the hospital and throughout.

🟢 We continue to strongly emphasise the importance of staying home if you are unwell. Stay away from hospitals, aged care services, and vulnerable people.
🟢 Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.
🟢 Use provided hand sanitiser in between, and while you are inside the hospital.

We thank the community for helping to reduce the spread, and protecting patients in our health service from other illnesses.

Teams across Broken Hill Hospital are finding practical ways to reduce waste, recycle materials and make more sustainable choices in their everyday work.

Just some of the ways we are contributing to more sustainable community:

🌏 Collecting used batteries, toner cartridges, toner bottles, waste toner hoppers, fuser units and drum units. These are sent to recycling facilities, where materials such as metals and plastics are recovered.

🌏 Collecting plastic bottles and soft drink cans in across several clinic and office areas to be sent for recycling.

🌏 Recycling disposable curtains and sterile wraps has helped divert healthcare waste from local landfill. The recovered materials are turned into a range of new products including outdoor furniture, speed humps and tree guards.

We received a bench made from recycled plastic earlier this year to commemorate this initiative, which sits outside the Broken Hill Emergency Department.

By working together, staff are helping create a more sustainable future for our hospital and community ❤️🌏

Recent detections have occurred across the South Coast, Greater Sydney, Central Coast and Hunter regions, including:

📢 Seven events in crested terns at Dolls Point, Anna Bay, Kurnell, Roseville, Garie Beach, Tuggerah and Shell Cove.

📢 One event in a silver gull at Batemans Bay.

📢 Two events at Salt Ash, involving a shy albatross and a wedge-tailed shearwater.

📢 One event in a kite at Tuross Heads.

What you'll be doing
🟡 The Primary Health Care School Based Nurse Program is responsible for facilitating identification of health, wellbeing and social needs and the coordination of appropriate early intervention, assessments, and referral to services for school-aged children and young people attending designated primary and secondary schools within the FWLHD.

To be eligible for this role, you must hold a current Registered Nurse Division 1 National Registration (AHPRA) with a minimum of 3 years post registration clinical experience working with children and young people, a post registration qualification related to the specialty area of child and family health, or paediatrics, or adolescent / youth health nursing practice, Primary Health Care (child and family health) or other related area or willing to obtain qualifications within six months.
